ACT Practice Drills Goal Questions Yes / No Questions Flow Questions Grade Achievement Test

Corrections The process of understanding, correcting and explaining one’s mistake reinforces the learning. Do the corrections not just for points, but do them to better understand.

Corrections Directions 1. Quiz and Number 2.Type of Skilled Tested. 3.Explain your mistake AND/OR why the correct answer is correct.

Sample Correction Test: The Music of the O’odham #1 Skill: Diction and Syntax Explanation: I chose ‘no change’ because I thought having both words gave more detail. The correct answer is just associated because it is more precise. Omit Needless words.

Sample Correction Test: Relaxing Commas #5 Skill: Appositive Commas Explanation: I did not know how to use the appositive comma correctly. The words ‘blue and red’ are modifying the wall in a appositive phrase; therefore, commas are needed before and after.

Sample In correction Test: Relaxing Commas #5 Skill: Appositive Comma Explanation: I put A but it was D because there needed to be commas.

Corrections for the Entire Packet are Due Monday. –Except for the Rhetorical Test Goal Yes/No Flow Corrections for the Achievement Quiz is due Today Absent or Incomplete Test –Explain why the correct answer is correct for each question.

Rhetorical Questions Normally appear toward the end of the passage. Three Basic Types KEY: READ THE ENTIRE PASSAGE!

I tried to will myself toward the glass doors. “Now,” I thought. But I couldn’t. Freedom was just twenty quick steps away. If the writer were to delete the underlined portion, what would the passage lose? a.An important detail b.A transition from one sentence to the next c.Some of its personal tone d.Nothing at all, since the sentence is out of place

Sample I turned and walked back to English class. The writer wishes to add details that emphasis his trip back to English class. Which best accomplishes this? a. English class to learn grammar skills. b. English class excited about my day. c. English class knowing I will succeed. d. English class hoping there will be a sub.

Types of Rhetoric Questions Goal Questions –All options could be true. – Questions have specific goal. Flow –Transition between paragraphs and sentences. Yes or No –Questions the entire passage –Two options are absurd

Rhetoric Tip Know what the question is asking –Entirety –Specific Choose the option is specific to the question.

Flow Test the logical progression and organization of the passage. The questions are stylistic, instead of substitution.

Goal Questions ACT will ask which answer best accomplishes a certain goal. All choices sound pretty good.
