What is Title 1? How Can I Be Involved? Required Annual Parent Meeting Fall 2016

What is Title 1? Title 1 is a federally funded program that provides money to help students who are low achieving, or students who are most at risk of falling behind. Title 1 funds are allocated to schools based on the number of students who are receiving free/reduced lunch. Schools with 40% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch are eligible to receive Title 1 funds. Schools with 75% must be served as Title 1.

Title 1 Schoolwide Campus for MOTLEY will be a Title 1 campus for this school year. 87.6% of students at MOTLEY received either free or reduced lunch. MOTLEY will operate a schoolwide program. A schoolwide program means that Title 1 funds are used to upgrade the entire educational program. Title 1 funds are used to serve all the children attending the school in order to raise academic achievement.

Title 1 Campus Requirements Each Title 1 campus must: – conduct a Comprehensive Needs Assessment – collect and analyze data related to student achievement – develop a Campus Improvement Plan – annually review the effectiveness if the plan – develop a budget for the Title 1 campus funding that must address providing supplemental assistance to students who experience difficulties in meeting the State’s performance targets

MISD Title 1 Funding for For the school year, MISD will receive a total of $9,504,006 in Title 1 funding. Required district reserves for program administration, parent involvement, staff development, homeless student support, and private non-profit schools equal $1,031,007. The remaining funds are then allocated to Title 1 campuses based on a per pupil formula

Title 1 Campus Allocations Campus Allocations are determined by: – Taking the number of students on free/reduced lunch – And, – Multiplying that number by the per pupil district allocation for that particular campus. MOTLEY’S Funding Formula: – 417 x $382 = $159,294

Required Title 1 Parent Involvement Each Title 1 campus must develop a Parent Involvement Policy with input from teachers, administrators, PARENTS, and community members Each Title 1 campus must develop a Parent-School Compact – This is an agreement between parents, the school, and sometimes students on what each entity will do during the year to ensure student success Parents at Title 1 schools will receive a Parent’s Right to Know letter by the 4 th week of school – This letter will inform parents that upon request, they can receive information about their child’s teacher qualifications, if the teacher is teaching under an emergency or provisional status, the teacher’s college major, teacher’s advanced degrees, and the qualifications are any paraprofessionals working with their child Parents will also receive the Parent’s Right to Know Non State Certified Teacher letter if: – Their child has been taught for 4 or more weeks by a teacher that is not state certified

Parent Involvement Opportunities Attend campus based parent involvement activities! – teacher conferences, curriculum nights, PTA meetings, literacy nights, etc. Attend district based parent involvement activities! – Campus Health Fairs, adult ESL, the NUMEROUS sessions and workshops presented by the Title 1 Parent Involvement Facilitators, etc. Ask to serve on campus or district committees and focus groups!
