Eagle Ford Shale By: Ryan Delagarza

Discoveries The Eagle Ford Shale (EFS) is quite possibly the largest single economic development in the history of the state of Texas and ranks as the largest oil & gas development in the world.

The Bahamas are located off the coast of Florida, in between Florida and Cuba. Area Affected by Eagle Ford Shale

Relevance to my Life This topic applies to my life because my dad is a TFR. (Technical Field Representative) with Baker Hughes Drill Bits. The advantages of knowing about this topic is that I have been to several rig sites with my dad and get to see all the different jobs people do. My dad sells the drill bits that the companies use to help get to the oil from the ground. These drill bits are important and must do their job.

Interview Marathon, EOG, Conoco, BHP, PXT, are all companies that operate rigs. They call on my dad’s company to run their drill bits. There are several other companies. All these are in the Eagle Ford Shale drilling area. My dad said that it’s expected that this area will stay very busy for at least the next 10 years. Companies drill all day and all night. They can call you out anytime if they need a drill bit.

Additional Interesting Information The core counties include an area that stretches from north of Gonzales down to Webb County at the Texas-Mexican border. Chesapeake Energy Corp. says the Eagle Ford shale formation in Texas could hold 342 million barrels of oil. The first Eagle Ford well was drilled in 2008 when 26 drilling permits were issued and the area produced only 358 barrels per day that first year. In 2012, Eagle Ford oil output rose to more than 352,000 barrels a day, as the number of drilling permits surged to 4,143.

Vocabulary Oil- (noun), thick, flammable, usually dark-colored liquid that is a form of bitumen or a mixture of various hydrocarbons, occurring naturally in various parts of the world and commonly obtained by drilling: used in a natural or refined state as fuel, or separated by distillation into gasoline, naphtha, benzene, kerosene, paraffin, etc. Shale- (noun) a rock of fissile or laminated structure formed by the consolidation of clay or argillaceous material. hydraulic fracturing(known as fracking)-( noun) a process in which fractures in rocks below the earth's surface are opened and widened by injecting chemicals and liquids at high pressure: used especially to extract natural gas or oil.

Future Developments The Eagle Ford is the most active shale play in the world with over 200 rigs running. Operators are indicating the play will be developed for decades to come. Hundreds of jobs will be available to those in the area for years to come.
