Galatians 3:1-9 An in depth look at these verses.

Gal 3 1) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2) This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3) Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4) Have you suffered so many things in vain–if indeed it was in vain? 5) Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?–

6) just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7) Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8) And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” 9) So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

2) This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3) Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? total contrasts There is only one way to receive the Spirit and it is not by preaching some law-method. The only way to receive the Spirit is by faith in the finished work of the cross of Christ, Vs 1 Christ crucified. Also Acts 10:43) “To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.” The same is true of sanctification. Just like the law could not save us, neither can it sanctify us.

You cannot have it both ways it is either one or the other. Gal 4:21) Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? 22) For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. The very law they were trying to obey judges them of their error! Isaac Ishmael

23) But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman (was born) through promise,

24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar– 25) for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children–

26) but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. 28) Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. 29) But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. And is unfortunately the case even to today. There is nothing more volatile in all of Christendom as this topic of the law. WHY?

This is at least part of the answer 2 Cor 3:14) But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. Gal 3:3) Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

Still though this fact remains Gal 4:30) Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” The two cannot co-exist

31) So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

If that is not enough lets read Hebrews 7. 11) Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood ( for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12) For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.

15) And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16) who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.

The power of an endless life includes the here and now by sanctification in the Spirit! Gal 3:3) Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:1 Justification Galatians 3:3 Sanctification The life of the Spirit of God; His various ministries to the believer are critical to his/her sanctification =Maturity in the faith Ron Merryman Galatians God’s antidote to legalism p.39

Galatians 5:16) I say then: 1. Walk in the Spirit, 2. and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 18) But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 13) For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14) For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Contrasts

22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23) gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
