Outcomes for Today Understand the foundational ideas and concepts of the professional learning standards Become familiar with the Learning Forward Professional Learning Standards’ essential components

Standards – The What? The Why? At your table, discuss What are the different standards you have experienced? Why do we have standards?

Why Are Standards Important? Standards make explicit that the purpose of professional learning is for educators to develop the knowledge, skills, practices and dispositions to help students perform at high levels. Standards guide the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional learning.

Underlying Assumptions Professional Learning Focused on educator learning Student Results Linked to educator effectiveness Equity Designed for student and educator excellence

The Role of the Standards What They Are: A description of the attributes of effective professional learning A template for organizing professional learning A guide for all educators

Prerequisites For Professional Learning Educators commit to ensuring all students succeed. Educators are ready to learn. Professional learning fosters collaborative inquiry and learning. Educators learn in different ways and at different rates.

Table Group Activity Number off 1-7 Find your assigned group, and introduce yourself to your new group members. In a round-robin manner, share the following: Rate your own familiarity with the professional learning standards on a scale from 1-5

Unpacking the Standards Individually read your assigned standard, including the introduction and the elaboration. Use handout 5.1 to organize your notes. As a team, discuss the key points and your insights about this standard. Prepare and post a chart using the window pane template as your guide.

Standards Showcase Collectively determine how your group will showcase your standard in a three- minute presentation using handout 5.2. Use handout 5.3 to collect key points on each standard during the showcase. Be prepared to debrief with the whole group following the showcase.

Give One, Get One! Individual think time: write down ways in which your district is already implementing these standards Make eye contact and share one idea each

Necessary Conditions for Effective Professional Learning Create a comprehensive system for Professional Learning Collect and use data about Professional Learning to improve quality and results Provide and support effective Professional Learning for all staff Build and share expertise Develop skillful facilitators
