Luke: An Eyewitness Account July 13, 2016 Wednesday Bible Study

Luke 19:11-40 NKJV

We draw even closer to Jerusalem (19:11) and to the ultimate purpose for which Jesus had been born.

LUKE 19:11-12 NKJV 11 Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately.

12 Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.

Verse 11 is an explanatory note preceding the parable. Soon Jesus would be caught up in controversy. He also wanted to give insight as to the pattern of the Kingdom of God.

LUKE 19:13-19 NKJV 13 So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.

14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’

18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’

Jesus is the nobleman in the story. The far country is heaven. While Jesus is in heaven, He has placed His servants in charge. So, while He is away, the citizens revolt.

They tell the servants of the nobleman that they do not want Him to reign over them. It is in this hostile environment that His servants are to do business in His absence.

Each of 10 servants was given one mina to invest while He was gone. Upon His return, He held each servant accountable for their investments.

The first servant presented to the nobleman 10 minas. He had turned 1 into 10. The nobleman (Jesus) was pleased and __________(1) him with responsibility over 10 cities. rewarded

The second presented to the nobleman 5 minas. He was also commended and given responsibility over 5 cities.

Jesus is teaching that there are ________(2) of reward awaiting His children based upon their faithful service on earth. The rewards were equivalent with ______________(3). degrees responsibilities

LUKE 19:20-26 NKJV 20 “Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief.

21 For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’

22 And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.

23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ 25 (But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’)

26 ‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

The third servant returned to the nobleman only what he had received. He had not invested it but had _________(4) it until his master returned. preserved

The mina was not for preservation but was to be invested. The preservation of the mina represents lack of _____(5). faith

Even a ______(6) faith would have put the mina in a bank and collected interest. The nobleman further rewards the faithful service of the first servant with the mina of the ______(7). little third

Note that the first servant did not receive the unfaithful servant’s ________(8). He was given his resources to manage. reward

The people did not understand actions of the nobleman (v25). But, Jesus is teaching that ____________(9) will be rewarded and that some will have ______(10) than others. faithfulness more

If you do not invest the assets given to you by Christ, you risk _______(11) what you have (v26). losing

LUKE 19:27 NKJV 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.

Verse 27 is no longer speaking of believers and their God-given resources. This verse refers to those who did not want the nobleman (Jesus) to reign over them.

In this harsh statement, the judgement of God is on display. They had the choice to make and they chose rebellion and death.

LUKE 19:28-31 NKJV 28 When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

29 And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples,

30 saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here.

31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’”

We have finally _______(12) at Jerusalem. It has been a long hard journey from Galilee. On Olivet (the Mount of Olives), Jesus looks over the Kidron Valley to the city He loves. arrived

It will be the scene of both ______(13) and _________(14) over the next several days. There is a prescribed way for Him to enter the city. agonytriumph

The very mode of transportation, an unridden colt will announce that He was Messiah.

ZECHARIAH 9:9 NKJV 9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you;

He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

From this moment forward, the actions of Jesus will be specifically dictated to fulfill the prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah.

LUKE 19:32-40 NKJV 32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them.

33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.”

35 Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.

37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen,

38 saying: ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the L ORD !’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”

This passage is known as the triumphal entry. This is the moment Jews had been praying for. __________(15) of prayers were being fulfilled. They could not help but to rejoice and cry out. Centuries

The only people who were not happy were His enemies. The Pharisees ________(16) the praise of Jesus as Messiah. forbade

They wanted Jesus to rebuke them and deny their praise. He would not. This was the necessary beginning to the week that would alter history.

He declared even the _______(17) were prepared to cry out. And they would; only a few days would pass before the earth would shatter at His triumphant cry, “It is finished!” stones
