Five Early Signs and Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a condition that impacts the central nervous system. Over time, the condition leads to a breakdown of the sheaths found around the nerves. As the condition worsens, the individual notices a decline in physical and mental function. Knowing the early signs of Multiple Sclerosis will help you to see the need for prompt medical attention as a way to slow the progress of the disease. Here are some examples of the common and less common signs that MS is developing.

Emotional Shifts For many people, changes in their moods and general emotions are among the earliest signs that something is wrong. People with MS may find that they feel more depressed for no apparent reason. Some will develop anxiety disorders that include panic attacks. Others will find that they are more easily irritated by just about everything loved ones do. These shifts are most noticeable when you are known for being someone who is even tempered and suddenly seem to be nervous and get angry at the drop of a hat.

Intimacy Issues Since MS directly impacts the function of the nervous system, it should come as no surprise that intimacy issues can develop. At first, they may be shrugged off as a byproduct of stress at work or getting a little older. As things get worse, it becomes harder to assume the issues are temporary. Being checked for MS is a smart move by anyone who notices they no longer enjoy intimacy the way they did in the past.

Combination of Numbness and Pain If you have MS, there’s a good chance that you are experiencing a combination of numbness and pain. For example, your cheeks may lack any sensation while there is a definite stabbing pain in backs of your legs. Seeing a doctor when you have this type of combination happening is in your best interest.

Balance Issues You use to be so sure-footed that it was possible to walk or climb any type of terrain. Now it seems as if you can lose your balance on any kind of level flooring. There’s also a little bit of vertigo when you first stand. Don’t assume that your problem is a nutritional imbalance or getting a little older. Get tested and see if MS is what is causing these changes.

Increasing Fatigue Everyone gets tired now and then, but a nap or a good night’s sleep is all it takes to bounce back. For the last couple of months, you can sleep like a baby and still wake up feeling tired. Since MS weakens your nervous system, the sleep that used to be so recuperative is less effective. Instead of accepting a future filled with physical and mental fatigue, it pays to find out what can be done to improve your quality of life. If you exhibit any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical help at once. The right treatments will make it easier to control the progress of Multiple Sclerosis and keep the impact of the symptoms to a minimum.
