Coal mines in the 19 th century Roofs falls were common as wooden pit props used to support the mine they rooted. Eventually these were replaced with metal pit props. Coal dust caused lung diseases like black spit or silicosis A lack of protected clothing caused injuries and death

There was Different types of mines There was the bell pit that was owned or used by a few men. When the were finished with the mine they would just make another close by. There was a trap pit. The coal from the tarp pit got to the surface by people putting baskets on there backs full of coal and climbing up the ladders to the. Spiral pit mine was like a trap pit. The coal was carried in there backs up sloping walkway or ladders to the surface.

The jobs in the mines Trappers the youngest children some as young as four or five worked as trappers opening and shutting the traps on the air doors of the mines. Hewers were mainly men or older boys who cut coal away from the coal face. This was a dangerous and tiring job. The bearers filled carts with coal which they would dragged or pulled to the bottom of the pit shaft. They also carried the coal in baskets on there backs to the surface

Reasons why coal increased Coal increased because of the war. Steam engines used coal to get back and forward. Steam ship used coal to get soldiers to other country's. It also decreased because after the war not as much steam ships and steam trains were needed

How conditions changed safety clothing was introduced. Ropes were stronger. Better props were used. Ventilation fans were put in mines

They also took canary's down the mines and if they died the men would leave the mines because this meant there was carbon monoxide in the mine this caused people to choke and die.

New rules Females were not allowed down the mines. Boys that couldn't read and writ were also not allowed
