I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU CRAZY FRESHMAN THE LESSON OF YOUR LIFE! HOW TO TAKE NOTES!!!! Learning to be effective and precise note takers is an essential skill and is invaluable to your success!!!

So here are the facts… The normal English speaking rate is between words per minute (wpm) The normal English reading rate is between words per minute (wpm) The normal English writing rate is between words per minute (wpm) What does this mean for you, the scrambling-to- write-it-all-down student? You are simply NOT going to be able to copy/record the information word for word. So you better learn to take notes!

How To Take Notes: What should you listen or look for?  Main idea!!!!!!  Specific details, if they are important…  Brief summary of the content

How might you take notes on this sentence? The male seahorse can give birth to as few as 1 and as many as 2,000 "fry" at a time and pregnancies last anywhere from two to four weeks, depending on the species. NOTE VERSION:  Male!  fry born  Prego 2-4 wks

What is going on in this picture?

Now let’s do it with words…. PHANTOM LIMB A phantom limb is the sensation that an amputated or missing limb (even an organ, like the appendix) is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. Approximately 50 to 80% of individuals with an amputation experience phantom sensations in their amputated limb, and the majority of the sensations are painful. Phantom sensations may also occur after the removal of body parts other than the limbs, e.g. after amputation of the breast, extraction of a tooth (phantom tooth pain) or removal of an eye (phantom eye syndrome). The missing limb often feels shorter and may feel as if it is in a distorted and painful position. Occasionally, the pain can be made worse by stress, anxiety, and weather changes. Phantom limb pain is usually intermittent. The frequency and intensity of attacks usually decline with time. A slightly different sensation known as phantom pains can also occur in people who are born without limbs and people who are paralyzed. Phantom pains occur when nerves that would normally innervate the missing limb cause pain. It is often described as a burning or similarly strange sensation and can be extremely agonizing for some people, but the exact sensation differs widely for individuals. Other induced sensations include warmth, cold, itching, squeezing, tightness and tingling (Ramachandran & Blakeslee 1998; Ramachandran & Hirstein 1998).Ramachandran & Blakeslee 1998Ramachandran & Hirstein 1998

Our notes might look like this: Phantom Limb  the sensation that an amp. or missing limb is still attached to body & moves  50 to 80% of ind. experience this after amp.--- usually painful!  Phantom pain can occur in those who are born w/o limb or are paralyzed

Okay, Your Turn. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is a region of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean in which a number of aircraft and surface vessels are alleged to have disappeared. Some people have claimed that these disappearances fall beyond the boundaries of human error, equipment failure or natural disasters. Popular culture has attributed some of these disappearances to the paranormal, a suspension of the laws of physics, or activity by extraterrestrial beings. Though a substantial body of documentation exists showing numerous incidents to have been inaccurately reported or embellished by later authors, and numerous official agencies have gone on record as stating that the number and nature of disappearances is similar to any other area of ocean, proponents of paranormal phenomena claim that many have remained unexplained despite considerable investigation. The following is a list of all crafts that have disappeared, never to be seen again, after venturing to the Bermuda Triangle: Flight 19, Raifuku Maru, SS Cotopaxi, USS Cyclops (AC-4), Carroll A. Deering, Wreckers, S.S. Suduffco, Star Tiger and Star Ariel, DC-3 Airliner NC16002 disappearance, Harvey Conover and Revonoc, KC-135 Stratotankers, B- 52 Bomber (Pogo 22), Charter vessel Sno'Boy, SS Marine Sulphur Queen, and the SS Sylvia L. Ossa.
