Everybody knows about pollution, in fact is a part of our lives today. Definition : “Presence of contamination in the environment Causes Harmful effects to man & environment” Types : Air, Water, Land, noise, Thermal, Electromagnetic Pollution.

The Electromagnetic Pollution Electromagnetic pollution is a buzzword describing the excessive exposure to electromagnetic radiation or electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by electronic devices like cell phones, cordless phones, WiFi routers or Bluetooth enabled equipment. Strong electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of about 50 to 60 cycles per second (hertz, or Hz) and the related electromagnetic radiation (EMR) are harmful to us. Long term exposure may aggravate any existing health problems or diseases such as cancer.

Are All Types Of Radiation Dangerous? No! We are subject to natural radiation all day long. We are exposed to background radiation like terrestrial radiation, cosmic radiation. And then there is the sun, our most important natural source of radiation, i.e. sunlight. We are used to it, most of it is harmless, we even depend on it.

Our bodies can absorb electromagnetic radiation as energy, meaning molecules in the tissue directly exposed to radiation get excited. In other words, they heat up. Now, the heat caused by the non-ionizing spectrum of sunlight is considered harmless. The energy emitted by electronic devices is magnitudes lower than that of the sun! Energy is directly proportional to the radiation’s frequency. Ultraviolet light — the kind that has a high potential to cause skin cancer — has a frequency of around 10 to the power of 16, while low intensity microwaves found with cell phones have a radiation of around 10 to the power of 9.

We know that the Sparrows were facing the problems due to the BTS(i.e. Cell Phone Towers). Cell Phone Towers also interfere with the honeybee’s ability to return to their hives leads to “Bee Colony Collapse Disorder”. Which reduces the Bees, Agricultural products and damages the environment we live,.

In 2011, wireless radiation was classified as a potential carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). This was in response to studies that indicated a potential correlation between cell phone radiation and cancer. While several scientific studies suggest a link between radiation and cancer, especially for long term user of cell phones, others dispute or relatives the link to cancer. Most of these studies are either flawed or outdated by now and thus, science remains inconclusive.

Wireless & Facts The strength of these wireless signals drops quickly over relatively short distances and thus the energy that reaches your body is extremely weak. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth energy are considered non-thermal, meaning it does not cause heating of tissue. So technically, you don’t have to worry. That said, children may be more vulnerable. If you are concerned, consider connecting to the Internet using an Ethernet cable, which would allow you to turn your wireless router off while it’s not needed by mobile devices. Wi-Fi signals are harmless and it’s close to impossible to overdose on them.

Protect Yourself From Electromagnetic Pollution? Keep calls short and use a headset. Avoid calls when the network signal is weak Don’t keep your phone close by when you sleep or set it to airplane mode. Not only will this decrease the radiation emitted by your cell phone improve your sleep. It will also save battery. Finally, look for a cell phone with a low SAR rating ( < 2W/kg)when purchasing your next one. Always keep away from BTS terminals, Damaged power Grids.

What can we do to reduce the danger? The idea is to interface a radiation sensor to the phone. Get what is the amount of radiation in the surrounding and decide whether to stay in that place or not. How it is useful ? We can know and measure the amount of radiation in our surrounding and take corrective measures and this leads to reduce the effects.

My Proposal is…… The Electromagnetic radiation sensor interfaced to the mobile handset for monitoring the amount of radiation in the environment and sends the data to the mobile handset for analysis. EMR DETECTOR AND MONITOR INTRFACE MOBILE HANDSET

Software An Android application for monitoring and giving notification to us about the radiation amount in the environment and has details of what are the actions we can do to reduce the effect. The notifications can be of sound, text, LED ( Red, Yellow, Green depending on radiation amount). With help of the data we obtained from this can be used to know what is the radiation amount around us and what can we do to reduce the effects. In future if we add this as a part in PCB of mobile while manufacturing and can be a portable and will reach to more people.
