Key Stage Two SATs Parents meeting September 2016

What are the SATs?  SATs (National Curriculum Tests) are taken during Year 2 and Year 6.  Year 6 tests assess performance in English (SPaG and Reading) and Maths.  Science and Writing is no longer assessed as part of the SATs. They are now assessed through teacher assessment.  Occasionally a sample test is administered in Science.  Writing is externally moderated once every 4 years.

Assessing Without Levels for SATs As part of the new national curriculum, levels have been abolished. Scaled scores will be used to report national curriculum test outcomes. 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’. However, due to the small differences in difficulty between tests, the ‘raw score’ (ie the total number of correct responses) that equates to 100 might be different (though similar) each year. The scale will not be confirmed until after the children sit the tests. It will have a lower end point (80 last year) below 100 and an upper end point above 100 (120 last year). A pupil’s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answered correctly. The pupil’s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table. A pupil who achieves the national standard will have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. This will mean that they are well placed to succeed at secondary school. You will receive your child’s raw score (number of raw marks awarded), scaled score and confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard. National Standard (scaled score of 100) is going to be about equivalent to an old 4B.

Timetable 2016/17 We will have a mock SAT week two weeks before every half term. We will do a practice test for every type of SATs test. SATs week beginning 8 th May 2016.

What can you do at home? Help children with ‘Big Talk’ on a Thursday night before the ‘Big Write’. Revise and test spellings during the week (tested on a Monday). Encourage children to complete their homework under timed conditions, in silence and independently. Only help your child by checking through their answers and if necessary making corrections in another colour. (handed in on Monday). Help children to learn their tables. Listen to children read their guided reading book and encourage them to fill in their reading diaries. Encourage children to work through their revision guides independently or with an adult if you choose. Numeracy Challenge Club After Christmas Challenge Clubs
