 Counselling Interview  Employment Interview  Exit Interview  Grievance or Confrontation Interview  Group Interview  Informational Interview  Interrogation Interview  Performance Review  Persuasive Interview  Telephone Interview

 Research the Company  Rehearse your answers before the interview  Dress Professionally  Arrive on Time  Maintain eye contact and smile  Listen carefully to the interviewers questions.  Keep all your answers positive  Ask the interviewer a question  Deliver a firm handshake and smile at the end of the interview.

General Suggestions for Group Interviews Be prepared for confusion and noise Learn who the panelists are ahead of time Appear Confident and in control Make your answers direct, brief, honest and sincere

Specific Suggestions for Panel Interview Speak to everyone, not just the interviewer Take an active role but don’t always speak first

Specific Suggestions for Board Interviews If possible, sit where you won’t have to constantly move your head back and forth to see all the interviewers. Make eye contact with all interviewers and not just the person who asks a questions. Stick by your answers

Suggestions if you are interviewed by telephone (Ceniza-Levine,2009;Hentz,2009; Needleman, 2009a, 2009b)  Prepare the same way you would for a face-to-face interview.  Speak slowly, calmly and clearly in order to be understood  Show a complete attention to the interviewer.  Prepare to sound sincere, enthusiastic, friendly yet professional.  Listens to questions carefully before answering.  Send Thank You letter.

Opening Phase – is just as essential for understanding as the introduction.  Rapport – a comfortable feeling that makes both participants receptive to the interview  Orientation - overall view of the interview.  Motivation - motivate the interviewee to give straightforward, complete answer.

-the heart of the interview, for in this phase both interviewer and interviewee have the opportunity to ask and respond to questions.

-Should begin with a summary of the major points covered in the interview and of any conclusions reached.

Hypothetical Open Questions On your first day of work, you arrive an hour late. How would explain this and to whom? Direct or Specific Questions Is the accusation against you accurate? Who recommended you to us? How long have you been in this field of work? Do you think you should receive a promotion?

Closed Questions What size of company do you prefer-large, medium or small? How would you rate the president’s handling of terrorists? a. Superior c. Good e. Poor b. Excellent d. Fair f. Undecided Loaded Questions Are you still difficult to get along with? Have you stopped drinking yet?

Leading Questions We are looking for a creative people here. What do you have to offer? I don’t think you have been working up to your potential. What do you think? Third Person Questions Do you think the new raise is fair? What do you group think about the last merger proposal?

 Try to relax and be yourself  If a question catches you off guard, don’t rush unprepared into an answer.  If you don’t know or cant remember certain information, say so.  Use open ended questions to present information you want the interviewer to know.  Listen carefully to hypothetical questions.  Be attentive to the interviewer’s when direct or specific questions are asked.  Avoid answering yes or no to a loaded question  Beware of leading questions
