Like single-word verbs, phrasal verbs can be both intransitive and transitive: The cat threw up. V-int The cat vomited. V-int He messed up our plans. V-trdir obj He ruined our plans. V-tr dir obj slide 2: intransitive and transitive single-word and phrasal verbs English 402: Grammar

As in Reed-Kellogg diagrams of sentences containing intransitive phrasal verbs, in diagrams of sentences with transitive phrasal verbs the particle is placed on the main line next to the verb, and as with diagrams of sentences containing transitive verbs, the phrasal verb is separated from the headword of the direct object (in other words, the N of the NP) by a vertical line perpendicular to the main line.
