China’s Poverty in the 21st Century By: Mark Andrade

How did Poverty even start? Rural-urban Migration: People are moving into urban centers at a record pace in search of high-paying jobs. While this creates a substantial amount of poverty in the cities with people taking underpaying jobs and increasing their cost of living substantially, the most severe poverty is in the rural areas. That’s where the ones left behind (women, children, elderly) now struggle daily to survive. Education Gap: Education is widely accepted as a key to eliminating poverty. The Chinese government recognized this in the 1980s and began a nine-year compulsory education system to cover kids from ages The system has had some success for urban children, but has created a large divide between urban and rural students. Access to Healthcare: Healthcare suffers from a similar challenge. While it is also considered a basic right under the Chinese constitution (along with education and social security), there is a disparity between urban and rural. While the central government provides some funding, most of the funding comes at the local government level.

What is Poverty? The state of being extremely poor or the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. How can it be fixed? 1.Provide living wages and family- oriented labor policies 1.Invest in a safety net that supports and promotes economic mobility 1.Invest in community solutions, run by people who know poverty firsthand

China has lifted 800 million people out of poverty Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China has lifted more than 700 million people out of poverty and improved the living standards for 1.3 billion people So China and the World Bank agree, give or take a hundred million people China’s population right now with poverty

What shall become of China’s children who have poverty? The mother and father of the family received nine years of education, 6 years of elementary and 3 years of secondary, through the local schooling system. Their child would be in elementary school. In China, children are expected to care for their aging parents. They live in a simple brick house nearby where they farm. Some countryside villagers in China see little point of schooling because they do not use what they learned to work on the land. Also in China, the number of openings for colleges is low, but the number of applicants is high.

How bad is poverty in China? 1.China is one of the top five poorest countries in the world 2.One in 10 Chinese is poor 3.At least 82 million people in China live below the poverty line 4.Two hundred thousand Chinese don’t have access to electricity 5.The Chinese yuan is less valuable in areas with a greater gender imbalance 6.Close to 70 million earn an annual income of 2,300 yuan ($376) 7.Over 6 million Chinese don’t have access to clean fuel to heat their homes and cook 8.Three-quarters of global poverty reduction between 1990 and 2005 occurred in China 9.About 12.3 million people rose above the poverty line in Since 2013, the percentage of Chinese living below the poverty line has been cut nearly in half

News report on how bad it is. China's poverty finally acknowledged after children die in bin: People are suddenly up in arms about the suffocation of five young boys in a rubbish bin. The bodies of the five cousins aged from nine to 13 were found in the container – roughly the size of the commercial wheelie bins you find in this country – in the southwestern city of Bijie last Friday. Having dropped out of village school in the province of Guizhou and run away to the city, the boys seem to have lit a fire in the bin and climbed inside to take shelter as the temperature in the mountainous city fell to around 6C. They then succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. No images could be found I tried my best but no images were posted on the site
