Kiwanis Flowers EDU620: Meeting Individual Student Needs with Technology Instructor: Kelly O. Stewart Batesville Junior High Technology Community Event (Role of Educator) July 3, 2017

Introduction Greetings Everyone, My name is Kiwanis Flowers, and I’m a 7 th grade Math teacher at Batesville Junior High School. The upcoming meeting regarding the passing of the bond for technology education is very important and we need your help to get the bond passed. Some of you may know and some of you may not know just how important technology education is. We will have workshops for you, the people of the community to help give you a better understanding of how the bond if passed can allow us to implement technology in education. Technology in education is changing the way we teach and how students learn.

Technology Education In order to secure the funds for educational technology, an interactive workshop will be held for the public. The workshop will consist of three stations that the attendees will be able to gain information that will provide clarity of how the funds from the bond will be used and they will also get to see first-hand what type of technology will be used in the classroom. The first station will be designed to educate attendees on the framework of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The second station will address the career and technology education program that will be possible with the funding from the bonds. The final station will focus on 21st century learning skills that will be acquired during career and technology education courses.

Station 1: Universal Design Learning (UDL)  Universal Design for Learning applies for grades pre-kindergarten -12th grade because it is designed to fit the needs of diverse learners, regardless to age and grade level. Universal Design for Learning plays a vital role in education, because it ensures schools are implementing curriculums and lesson geared to fit the needs of diverse learners

Station 1: Universal Design for Learning (UDL)  Universal Design for Learning provides differentiated teaching instructions by providing students with choices. Universal design for learning reaches every learner.

Station 1: UDL  Attendees will have an opportunity to visit a station that has technology that is used in typical classrooms that utilize UDL. The station will include desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The station will also include a five minute video presentation that gives the attendees a snapshot of what UDL looks like in various classrooms. The video will include interviews provided by teachers who has experience with UDL. The teachers will explain the challenges they face in the classroom when it comes to providing a flexible learning environment with today’s diverse learners (Zydney & Hasselbring, 2014). The teachers in the video will express that the UDL is a “framework for developing curriculum from the onset to address the needs of all learners” (Zydney & Hasselbring, 2014).

Station 2: Technology and UDL for all learners Here at Batesville Junior High School, our mission is to make students lifelong learners who are able to function in the real world. Our goal is to prepare students for post-secondary education and life beyond. We believe every student has the ability to learn and it’s our responsibility to ensure that it happens.

Station 2: Technology and UDL For All Learners The purpose of Universal Design and Learning (UDL) is to ensure that educators and schools incorporate curriculum that can be used and understood by anyone. Technology aids in increased thinking skills, problem solving, and communication skills Technology meets learning needs that are diverse To successfully teach students in creative ways by integrating technology (computers, social media platforms, and mobile devices) into every day classroom practices.

Station 3: 21st Century Skills Acquisition and Employability Tools and interaction: At this station attendees will have a chance to experiment with some of the tools that will be used in the classroom.
