Who are Oncologists? The diagnosis, treatment & prevention of cancer is termed as Oncology and Oncologists are doctors who specialise in the treatment of cancer. They are the people who not only treat cancer but also keep a check on cancer relapse.cancer

Medical Oncologists Such oncologists treat cancer using Chemotherapy (drugs used to destroy cancer cells by keeping the cells from dividing & multiplying) or other similar medications like targeted therapy which are nothing but drugs. These medications prevent the cancer cells from developing and outspreading. Targeted therapy aims at particular proteins or genes.

Surgical Oncologist These oncologists are specialists in curing cancer by operating the patient. During surgery, these oncologists remove cancer tumours and the affected tissues, to cut-down chances of getting re-affected by cancer. Surgical oncologists are also required to perform certain biopsies for accurate diagnose of cancer. Biopsy often requires removal of a small portion of a tissue for a microscopic examination. For e.g., a prostate surgery using the da vinci robot (minimal invasive treatment).prostate surgery

Radiation Oncologist Radiation therapy is used by radiation oncologists to cure cancer. This therapy works by using high energy radiations, such as x-rays or proton rays to eliminate cancer cells. Using this therapy is widely advised as the radiations destroys the affected cells, slows down the tumor growth and doesn't affect the nearby healthy tissues.

Pediatric Oncologist These oncologists specialises in the treatment of cancer among children. There are certain types of cancers, such as leukemia, specific type of brain tumors & osteosarcoma, which finds its roots majorly in children however, there occurance among adults cannot be denied.

Gynecologic Oncologist Gynecologic cancers, such as cervical & uterine cancer are treated by these oncologists.
