Paul’s Trial Paul in prison in Rome – (Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, & Philippians) It appears he was released and travelled Paul Expected to be released (Philippians 2:24; Philemon 22) Titus 3:12 “…come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.” 1 Timothy 1:3 “As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus…”

Paul & Timothy’s Relationship Timothy joined Paul on his 2nd missionary journey Acts 16:1-3 Paul uses him in his work Trusts him to go to brethren in his absence Trusts him to deliver messages/reports “my beloved and faithful child in the Lord” 1 Cor 4:17 A personal letter from an aged preacher giving instruction to a younger preacher Chapters 1-3 Conduct within the church Chapters 4-6 Advice for the preacher Timothy

1 Timothy Our charge is love 1:5 Others wander into vain discussions, false doctrines, useless speculations 1:3-4, 6-11 They desire to teach, but shouldn’t be teaching. Why? Because of their lack of understanding. About what? Law. Laws are great! They are meant to bring under control those who are lawless. Strength, Mercy, Grace… 1:12-18 I received these in abundance from God, because I was a sinner God displayed His perfect patience in me Timothy, Fight the Good Fight 1:19-20

What Does a House of God Look Like? Pray! For all, for kings, for all in high positions. Why? 2:1-7 That we may lead peaceful, godly and quiet life which pleases not only us, but also God The One God…who gave Christ…who, in turn gave Himself for ALL. Men Pray! No anger and no quarreling. Women Adorn! Not like the world adorns 2:9-15 In outward clothes In inward being…Self-control Learn! Understand women’s role…as God designed from creation

What Does a House of God Look Like? Overseers…3:1-7 Above reproach, respectable, well thought of Not harsh, not quarrelsome, not greedy Inwardly: sober-minded, self-controlled, well-seasoned Hospitable: servant Able to teach Home: manages well, wife, children…with all dignity Deacons, likewise…3:8-13 Respectable, tested, well thought of Inwardly: sober-minded, faithful Not greedy, not double-tongued, Home: manages well, wife, children…dignified

What Does a House of God Look Like? Some will depart 4:1-3 Deceived by others. Deceived by teachings. Insincere, liars Consciences seared Forbidding what God has not forbidden

What Does a Servant of God Look Like? Servant of Christ 4:6-10 No myths/fables…only godliness. It is helpful for the present life and for the life to come Teach these things 4:11-16 Your youth is not a disadvantage Your speech, conduct, love, faith will all prove to be an example Read! Study! Exhort! Teach! Do not neglect your gift Practice! Immersion! Guard yourself and your teaching and you will save souls

Teach the Church…5-6 How to treat each other 5:1-25 Older men as fathers Older women as mothers Widows: Older and Younger 5:3-16 Elders 5:17-20 Slave/Masters 6:1-2 Teachers teaching other doctrines 6:3-10 Timothy, Fight the good fight! 6:11-21 Flee the evil. Pursue the good Until…Jesus comes at the right time. Charge the rich to depend on God 6:17-19 Avoid profane and opposing ‘knowledge’
