Become a VITA Volunteer Volunteers are needed for the upcoming tax season. No prior tax experience required and FREE training is provided. A New Leaf, in partnership with Valley of the Sun United Way, is looking for volunteers to support Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in the West Valley during the tax season (from late January to April 15). Volunteers will assist individuals and families in preparing their tax returns, claiming benefits for which they are eligible, and being connected to financial education and asset building opportunities. Services are provided free of charge. Sign up today! Volunteer opportunities with VITA include: TAX PREPARER Responsible for providing tax return preparation services to eligible taxpayers at a VITA site. Prepare basic 1040 tax returns and related schedules for eligible customers Interview taxpayer to determine that all income, deductions and allowable credits are claimed Answer tax related questions Qualifications Complete and be certified in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software – certification levels are basic and advanced SITE SCREENER Responsible for interviewing taxpayers to determine eligibility and the level of tax preparer certification required to complete a return. This position may also include Site Greeter responsibilities. Ensure that taxpayers have the necessary information and documents to complete their tax return Review intake form with taxpayer to ensure that it is complete and accurate Mark intake form with appropriate level of tax preparer certification required Answer tax-related questions Manage flow of taxpayers according to site operational procedures Complete and be certified in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software Complete Screener training INTERPRETER Provide complimentary interpreter services at VITA sites. Questions? Want to Participate? SITE GREETER Responsible for greeting and performing the initial screening of the taxpayers. Welcome taxpayers to site and sign them in Provide taxpayers with intake and survey forms to complete Answer non-tax related questions Monitor site traffic to ensure all taxpayers checking in receive assistance Inform taxpayers about and share flyers for benefits screening, prescription benefits cards, upcoming financial education classes, and other resources for which they may be eligible Qualifications Standards of Conduct test   Tax Return Closer Responsible for completing the final steps after a tax return has been quality reviewed. Print and review the tax return and all  forms associated with the tax return with the taxpayer(s) Advises the taxpayer(s) that he/she is ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the tax return that was prepared using the information and documents provided Advise the taxpayer(s) that signing and dating Form 8879 or  a paper tax return (if filing a paper return) gives the site permission to e-file the tax return and provides evidence to show the taxpayer had the opportunity to read the ‘under penalty of perjury’ statement Review form Publication 730 “Important Tax Records” envelope with the taxpayer(s) Talk about asset building opportunities for taxpayer Collect success stories Complete and be certified in tax law training at the basic level Commit to volunteering a minimum of 25 hours during tax season Questions?
