Definitions and the Parents Deity- a god or goddess. Olympian-an Olympian deity. Attribute-something attributed as belonging to a person, thing, group, etc. Sphere of Influence- Area of where something or someone has an effect. Provenance- place or source of origin. The Titans Kronos (Saturn) and Rhea are the parents of the Olympians.

Zeus (Jupiter) Zeus, the child of Kronos and Rhea, was the king of all the Gods. His attributes were the royal scepter, eagle and the lightning bolt. He was born and raised in the Diktaion Cave. The summits of mountains were sacred to him and so was the oak. He had control over the weather, sky, and order and fate. The picture on top shows Zeus as a well built man. You can see him with one of his most well known attributes, the lightning bolt in his right hand. In his left hand you can see a second attribute, the eagle. I chose this because I wanted to see how the people a long time ago wanted to see how they portrayed him. The second picture shows Zeus in the sky. It also seems like he’s holding a lightning bold similarly as the picture above. I thought this was a good picture because it portrays Zeus well. It also portrays Zeus in a more modern time. This is interesting because of the dramatic difference between now and the past.

Hades (Pluto) Hades was one of the three children who overthrew their father Kronos. His attributes were Cerberus, the key to the Underworld and the two pronged pick axe. Hades, or Pluto, was given rule over the Underworld while his two brothers received the sky and the sea. Hades can also be translated into “Unseen One”. He also had control of the minerals and other riches in the ground. He was very vicious and hated by humans and mortals. I chose the first picture because I saw the scepter. I usually don’t think about that when I think of Hades. So I thought it was interesting that he had that. The picture also doesn’t show him in a very bad way. I thought he would be a more bigger or bad type of person. In the second picture, this is more like what I imagine Hades as. He’s portrayed as terrifying person. It also seems like he has the helmet which makes the wearer invisible.

Poseidon (Neptune) Poseidon is known to have power over the ocean. He also has power over rivers and storms. He could calm storms and bring earth quakes at his will. His attribute is his trident (three-pronged spear). Another one of his attributes are his horses. I picked this picture because it shows him with his known attributes. It also shows him in his domain, the sea. I also like to see how people from before thought of how they portrayed their gods. I picked the second picture because many things changed and stayed the same. You can see that the trident is still in Poseidon’s right hand. He is in the sea. However, there are no horses and legs are not present in the second picture.
