Long Branch Middle School's Welcome to Long Branch Middle School's Back to School Night! September 29, 2016

Curriculum ~ Fusion Based on the Common Core Standards (CCS) – don’t just “cover” Vehicle used to drive standards – Glencoe Literature textbook - short stories, poems, plays, biographies, autobiographies, myths, and informational text. NEWS ELA – current event articles Writing Assignments include: Response to Literature, narratives, argument essays, descriptive essay, college letter, and research paper. Group Assignments: Acting, Debates, TV Commercials

Grading System Summative Assessment 70% Purpose: to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional period ex. tests, writing pieces Formative Assessment 30% Purpose: to monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback Homework Purpose: to practice the skill or strategy from the day’s lesson

The Difference Between Them… Formative Assessment Summative Assessment

Independent Reading 15 minutes of uninterrupted, goal-focused reading each day during class. Could be paperback or on the Chrome book. 5 minutes to react to the goal in their independent reading notebooks, which is checked every two weeks. Small group instruction occurs during this time. VIP

The PARCC Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers Only one testing session this year Questions based on the standards Technology Challenging The PARCC is not the end all and be all of this class. My goal is have our students become capable readers, writers, and thinkers. If we are able to attain this goal, then we will be prepared for this assessment.

Extra Help Mornings: Every day from 7:35 am until HR begins Lunch: Every day from 12:15 pm until Period 7 begins After School: Every day in between coaching seasons until work is complete. Need a signed pass for any session
