Civic Engagement across the Curriculum: Global Competencies and Global Citizenship

What is Global Citizenship? …ways of thinking living within multiple cross-cultural communities, cities, regions, states, nations and international collectives.” Hans Schattle, 2007

Global Competence articulates the knowledge and skills that students need in the 21st century. Global competency exists when a learner is able to: - analyze the world from many perspectives - envision alternatives to established dominant models - critically analyze diverse and conflicting points of view - understand the interconnectedness of peoples and systems - have a general knowledge of history and world events - accept and cope with the existence of different cultural values and attitudes -understand the richness and benefits of diversity -make personal and systemic change for a more just and sustainable world   .

With national and state conversations revolving around degree completion, transfer objectives, vocational training AND with remedial classes and basic skills already a difficulty for some, if not many of our students AND as this is not a part of my discipline… WHY is this even important?

Global Citizens understand nature of globalization appreciate diversity of humanity recognize critical global challenges collaborate with different sets of stakeholders

“What kind of education do we need?”

“What kind of society do we want “What kind of society do we want?”… If human beings hope to maintain and develop a particular type of society, they must develop and maintain the particular type of education system conducive to it. Ira Harkavy, Introductory Address, University of Oslo
