Class of 2021 Student Orientation

USJ Health Services MyStudentBody Health Requirements Insurance Requirement The Little Red House

USJ Health Services MyStudentBody University of Saint Joseph uses MyStudentBody to educate First Year students about risks that college students may face. The course you should take is the “Essentials” version. Instructions are in your Orientation packet. Please be sure to complete all 3 sections before you arrive for the fall semester. Each section has 3 parts: pre-assessment, the course content and a post-test at the end.

All full-time undergraduates, both commuters and residents, have to fulfill health, vaccine and insurance requirements in order to attend USJ.

USJ Health Services This is the main form that you will need. All students including commuters need to do a physical examination. Only student athletes need to the Athletics Pre-Participation form. You don’t need a new physical for our purposes so if it has been less than a year you can your health care provider to complete your form based on your prior exam

Call for a physical appointment Call tomorrow to set up your appointment for a physical before August 15th (our deadline). Please call us for instructions if your appointment will be after that. Your school nurse can be helpful in organizing your vaccine information or if you have a clinic sometimes you can get a physical there.

USJ Health Services Vaccinations-Remember the rule of 2’s You will need to get 2 each of the following vaccines: MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella) Varicella/Chickenpox or (Varivax ® ) OR- if you had natural disease the date to be recorded by your health care provider or you can get a blood test to show you are immune. Meningitis (Menactra ® or Menveo ®) Meningitis vaccine with brand names as above is required for residential students. IMPORTANT: Some students need a second vaccine if the first dose was given more than 5 years ago.

USJ Health Services Insurance Requirement: All full-time undergraduate students have a health insurance fee on their student account. Opting out of the University insurance requirement: Perform an annual waiver at Gallagher Student Health between 6/15 and 9/15; If approved your account will be credited in 7-10 business days; Not all plans are eligible for a waiver (out-of-state plans such as Medicaid and some commercial plans).

USJ Health Services Steps to performing waiver: Create an account at Gallagher Student Health; Don’t need any USJ passwords-be very certain about USJ ID #; Save your username and password for next year; Have mailing address of insurance company and your card handy; Helpful to do first time with an adult nearby if you can; Enter all of your insurance information; Not all plans are eligible for waiver, if approved you should see a credit in about 2 weeks.

USJ Health Services How we can help you: Questions or difficulties with health or insurance requirements/waiver; Treatment for common illnesses and injuries-including testing and medications; Most services do not require an appointment; Commuters are welcome; No charge or insurance required for most services; Don’t need to be in USJ insurance.

USJ Health Services What other services are available in the Little Red House ? Health Services has a Nutrition Consultant (Registered Dietitian) to help with following a specialized diet or just for eating healthy on campus. The Counseling and Wellness Center shares the Little Red House with Health Services. The Counselors are here to students with anxiety, adjusting to college, relationship issues and more.

USJ Health Services Setting yourself up for good health A thermometer is a small but good investment; ThermaCare ® or store brand heating pads come in handy; If you have any Epi-Pen ® make sure it is up-to-date and accessible in your back-pack; If you wear contact lenses, make sure you have up-to-date eye glasses; If you have asthma, have an up-to-date inhaler with you a school.

USJ Health Services Healthy Habits for College Students: Know that good health and time management are connected-use campus resources if you need help with either; Cover your cough-that will keep everyone healthy; Get a flu shot, especially if you have asthma; Establish a good routine that includes a healthy diet, exercise and some fun on a regular basis.

From your USJ peers Advice from WOW (Women of Wellness) peer education group -Success in college is not just about academics-getting involved, going to events and meeting new people is important-it allows you to connect with peers who are having the same experiences; -Don’t be afraid to talk to someone if you are feeling mentally overwhelmed or lonely because these feeling are common than most people realize; -Make sure you have some “me time”-not taking time for self-care can impair your best functioning; -Don’t underestimate the importance of getting enough sleep; -Balance is key!

Student Safety Tips Don’t hold door open for person behind-you don’t know who is a USJ student and who isn’t; Carefully follow sign-in procedures in residence halls-it is an important safety measure for fire, emergencies and other situations; Remain aware of your surroundings and if something doesn’t look right to you call Public Safety; Program Public Safety number into your phone-it is: 860.231.5222. Check your USJ email daily-Public Safety sends out a message if there is a crime alert; Public Safety can provide escorts to your car or hall if you are studying or have class at night.
