6th Grade Science Wednesday August 18, 2011 Mr. Foss Objective: You will know what it means to “think outside the box” Homework: None

Today’s Agenda 1. Finish up class business -Notebooks -Questions and concerns 2. Think Outside the Box Quiz

What does it mean to think outside the box?

Lesson # 1 Thinking outside the box means that you find creative solutions to problems. You could also say that someone who finds a creative solution to a problem is an innovative thinker.

Your turn… Try your best to “think outside the box” while answering the following questions:

Thinking Outside the Box Quiz Is there a 4th of July in England? How many birthdays does the average man have? Some months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days? A woman gives a beggar 50 cents. The woman is the beggar’s sister, but the beggar is not the woman’s brother. How come?

Thinking Outside the Box 5. Why can’t a man living in the United States be buried in Canada? How many outs are there in an inning of baseball? Is it legal for a man from California to marry his widow’s sister? Two women play five games of checkers. Each woman wins the same number of games. There are no ties. Explain.

Thinking Outside the Box 9. Divide 30 by ½ and add 10. What is the number? 10. A woman builds a house rectangular in shape. All sides have southern exposure. A big bear walks by. What color is the bear? 11. If there are three apples and you take away two, how many do you have? 12. If I have 2 U.S. coins that total 55 cents and one is not a 50 cent piece. What are the two coins?

Thinking Outside the Box 13. If you have one match and you walk into a room where there is an oil-burning lamp, a kerosene lamp, and a wood-burning stove, which would you light first? 14. How far can a dog run into the woods? 15. A doctor gives you three pills telling you to start now and take one pill every hour. How long will the pills last? 16. A farmer has 17 sheep and all but 9 die. How many are still alive?

Thinking Outside the Box 17. How many of each animal did Moses take with him on the ark? 18. A clerk in the butcher shop is 5’10’’ tall. What does he weigh? 19. How many two-cent stamps are there in one dozen? 20. What was the president’s name in 1970?
