Experience: Audience Etiquette Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Experience: Audience Etiquette The characters, or actors, you will see in the performance are not real but the puppeteers who operate them are! The puppeteers, though you cannot see them are very aware of their audience and respond to every movement and sound. When the audience laughs or claps, the puppeteers are encouraged! A talking or moving audience is a rude audience, and puppeteers get very frustrated because they feel as though no one is paying attention. Listening is also very important, remember the puppet show is LIVE. There is no stop or rewind, real people move the puppets, say the words, and changing the scenery and lights. Experience: Audience Etiquette Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Experience: Audience Etiquette It is important to remember: Stay in your place Sit quietly Laugh and clap- but no talking Ask all of your questions when the show is over Le Theatre de Marionette also asks that educators take students to the restroom prior to the performance. In an emergency, please quietly escort students to the lobby. We also ask that educators remove crying, shouting or otherwise disruptive students from the theater. And generally we ask that all educators assist our staff and artists by maintaining appropriate student behavior during the performance. Enrichment: What is a Marionette? Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Enrichment: What is a Marionette? A marionette is a puppet controlled from above using wires or strings. Marionettes are operated with the puppeteer hidden or revealed to an audience by using a vertical or horizontal control bar. Marionette performances are most often seen at a theater but they have also been used in films and on TV. In French, marionette means "little Mary”, because one of the marionettes was of the Virgin Mary, hence the name. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

Enrichment: Puppetry History Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Enrichment: Puppetry History Puppetry is an ancient form of performance. It was practiced in Ancient Greece, the oldest written records of puppetry can be dated to the 5th century BC. Enrichment: Puppet History Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Enrichment: Puppet History There is evidence that they were used in Egypt as early as 2000 BC when string-operated figures of wood were manipulated to perform the action of kneading bread, and other string-controlled objects. Wire-controlled, articulated puppets made of clay and ivory have been found in Egyptian tombs. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

Project: Counting Beans Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Project: Counting Beans Jack’s mom threw out his magic beans into the yard. For this project we are going to pretend she threw them in a bucket of beans. Students can help Jack by sorting through all the beans to find Jack’s magic seeds. Students call out the count of magic seeds they find to improve counting skills. Fill a bucket with dried beans, mix in “magic seeds” (beans painted a contrasting color or use marbles, glass beads etc.) Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

Project: Counting Beans Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Project: Counting Beans You can take this further by adding in some golden eggs. Now students have to keep track of two counts, magic seeds and golden eggs. This can be done on a large or small scale, each student can get a cup of beans and seeds or it can be done in a large tub or bucket for the students to work together. Project: Fee Fie Foe Fum! Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Project: Fee Fie Foe Fum! The giant’s famous line in this story is: “Fee Fie Foe Fum I smell the blood of an Englishman”. Have students make giant feet and stomp around the room searching for Jack. The giant feet will force the students into exaggerated movements which is great exercise! Try it as a team work exercise where students have to work together to get around the room. You can also make it into a relay race outside! Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

Project: Always looking up! Jack and the Beanstalk with Le Theatre de Marionette Project: Always looking up! A lesson we learn from Jack is that through determination Jack was able to find a solution to his family’s troubles, even if he did make a few mistakes along the way. Students should draw Jack happy after his success. These drawings can then be added to the class beanstalk!
