TENSE INDICATORS INCORPORATING NUMBERS The tense indicators NEXT-WEEK, AST-WEEK, NEXT- MONTH, NEXT-YEAR, and LAST-YEAR can also incorporate some numbers. But they vary in which numbers they can incorporate. NEXT-WEEK and LAST-WEEK incorporate the numbers 1-9

Substitute the tense indicator given in parentheses for the tense indicator in the sentences. ___________y/n-q___________ EXAMPLE: NEXT-WEEK SISTER COME-HERE? “Is your sister coming next week?” _____________y/n-q___________ IN TWO-WEEK SISTER COME HERE? “Is your sister coming in two weeks?”

Let’s look at your worksheets… Time Measurements and Tense Indicators Incorporating Number: The time sign MINUTE, HOUR, DAY, WEEK, MONTH and YEAR incorporate the numbers ____- ____. The tense indicators NEXT-WEEK, LAST-WEEK, NEXT-MONTH, NEXT-YEAR, and LAST-YEAR can also incorporate numbers 1-9. This is called ______ ___________ _____ _____. Remember in ASL the _____________ usually comes ___________ in the sentence to set up when the topic is ______________________. Step 1. Practice sentences 1-20 on your own and underline any signs you do not know. Step 2. What signs do we need to review? Step 3. Now lets sign the sentences together. Step 4. Now lets sign them with partners. Move around the room. Sign a sentence to a person… the person responds with the number that corresponds to that sentence.

TIME REDUPLICATION The signs HOUR, WEEK, MOTH, and NEXT-YEAR can be reduplicated to mean ‘hourly’, ‘weekly’, ‘monthly’, and ‘yearly’.

Substitute the reduplicated signs in parentheses for those given in the sentences. EXAMPLE: FRIEND I SHOULD GO-THERE VISIT DAILY. “I should visit my friend every day” (WEEKLY) FRIEND I SHOULD GO-THERE VISIT WEEKLY. “I should go to visit my friend every week” IT-SEND-ME NEWSPAPER WEEKLY. (MONTHLY) MUST I TAKE-PILL HOURLY. (DAILY) SHE GO-THERE EUROPE BUSINESS YEARLY. (MONTHLY) SHE EXERCISE DAILY. (WEEKLY) HE TO TELEPHONE I WEEKLY, I BORED I. (DAILY)

NOTE: MORE ON TIME REPETITION Some forms of time that occur regularly are not repeated but use a single movement. 1. To show EVERY-MONDAY, -TUESDAY, - WEDNESDAY, -THURSDAY, -FRIDAY, etc… a downward movement is used. 2. To show EVERY-MORNING, -AFTERNOON, NIGHT, a sideward movement is used.

Let’s look at your worksheets… Time Reduplication and Repetition: The signs HOUR, WEEK, MONTH and NEXT- YEAR can be _____________ to mean ‘hourly,’ ‘weekly,’ ‘monthly,’ and ‘yearly’. When glossing you can use the correct English word or you can put a ______ after the gloss. Step 1. Practice sentences 1-18 on your own and underline any signs you do not know. Step 2. What signs do we need to review? Step 3. Now lets sign the sentences together. Step 4. Now lets sign them with partners. Move around the room. Sign a sentence to a person… the person responds with the number that corresponds to that sentence.

On Your Own… There are 34 signs in this chapter. Create 10 sentences on your own that incorporate at least 20 of the signs from this chapter and use grammar structures from this chapter. Gloss the sentence first underlining the vocabulary used from this chapter, on the next line write out the grammar structure used. Add all glossing marks and double space. For example: _________q_________ ________q_________ WEEKLY YOU BACKPACK YOU? SEE ANIMALS MANY YOU? (HOUR, WEEK, MONTH, and NEXT-YEAR can be reduplicated to mean hourly, weekly, monthly and yearly.) You will be signing and translating these 10 sentences in class. Be sure to use only vocabulary we know—do not use www.aslpro.com to look up new signs. Rely on your master vocabulary list only! Make sure you know how to sign each sentence on the due date.

Sign several sentences about something you do regularly Sign several sentences about something you do regularly. Be sure to include in your facial expression and body movements how you feel about it. Gloss: Translation:

After studying the following sentences, sign them as quickly as possible using the facial expression indicated in the parentheses. Have your partner copy what you signed, including your facial expression. When you are finished repeat the activity with your partner leading. PUT-GAS-IN NOW! (Angry) MY BOOK, YESTERDAY STEAL. (Upset) YESTERDA NIGHT DINNER DELICIOUS. (Happy) LOOK-AT-ME!(Demanding, Angry) JOHN CRY. WHAT’S-UP? (Upset) NOT YOU-FORCE-ME DRIVE. I DON’T-LIKE! (Nervous) PLEASE YOU YOU-HELP-ME. (Entreating) I DON’T-WANT WORK AFTER SCHOOL. YOU? (Frustrated) COOK WHAT, YOU? (Questioning, Excited) SMELLS DELICIOUS! (“Mouth Watering”) I RECENTLY BUY BICYCLE. BEAUTIFUL. RED. (Excited)

Video Assessment! Choose two (2) sentence from each practice set… Record yourself signing these four sentences, upload to YouTube and email the link to me. Your FIRST AND LAST NAME must be in the MEMO along with the chapter. Do it like this: Ben Baker ABC.16 While signing the sentences you SHOULD TALK and EXPLAIN what you are doing and WHY. See sample:

High Five! Time to review vocabulary. Find a partner and make sure you each have a different colored pencil or hi-lighter. Come up and get your paper… one per group.

Quiz Time… Read through the questions on your handout. You will see the video story signed three (3) times. Answer the questions. Do not share answers. This is an independent assessment.
