In your group, identify the speaker, the context, and discuss the significance of the following quotes. Be prepared to discuss your answers with the class!!

Quote #1 “With this in mind, I made perhaps one step per minute. I moved faster when I saw Jem far ahead beckoning the moonlight. We came to the gate that divided the garden from the back yard. Jem touched it. The gate squeaked” (Lee 69).

Quote #2 There he was, returning to me. His white shirt bobbed over the back fence and slowly grew larger. He came up the back steps…Wordlessly he held up his pants. He lay down, and for a while I heard his cot trembling” (Lee 76).

Quote #3 “They’d be sewed up. Not like a lady sewed ‘em, like something I’d try to do. All crooked. It’s almost like –” (Lee 78)

Quote #4 “Don’t take it, Jem. This is somebody’s hidin place” (Lee 78)

Quote #5 “Jem looked from the girl-doll to me. The girl doll wore bags. So did I” (Lee 81).

Quote #6 “Trees dying. You plug ‘em with cement when they’re sick. You ought to know that, Jem” (Lee 83).

Quote #7 “He stood there until nightfall, and I waited for him. When we went in the house I saw he had been crying; his face was dirty in the right places, but I thought it odd that I had not heard him” (Lee 84).

Create a list of all of the gifts (in the order they are received) that the children found in the knot-hole. At this point, who do you think has placed the items in the tree for Jem and Scout to find? Explain your answer with evidence from the text.
