Introduction Aim of the study: Inclusion criteria Hair oil is used since ancient times for hair grooming and cosmesis Various types of hair oils are used all over worldwide This practice is more common in blacks compared to whites It is directly used over scalp or face Methodology of the study Inclusion criteria Patients of both sex of age group between 15-30 years were taken Patients using hair oil for more than 1 year. Patient ready to be a part of the study Exclusion criteria Patients of acne with a co-associated skin disorder or a psychiatric problem Pregnant females Females with menstrual irregularities or symptoms of PCOS Protocol followed Duration of the study was 3 months Sample size 50 patients(25 cases ,25 controls) After taking consent 25 cases of acne vulgaris coming to our OPD were randomly taken in the study 25 patients of any other dieseases were taken in the control group History and examination were done according to the proforma Aim of the study: To study the effect and prevalence of hair oil on the occurrence of acne vulgaris in 25 patients and comparing with 25 controls

Severity of eruptions were scored on 5 point scale Grade 1: clinically insignificant acne less than three lesions Grade 2: four to ten comedones Grade 3: 11 to 30 comedones Grade 4: 31 to 50 comedones with some inflammatory pustules Grade5: more than 50 comedones with papulo-pustules Observation It was found out that patients with acne vulgaris gave a history of hair oil applications 5– 7 times per week as compared to the control group as 2-4 times per week The severity of acne varied with the application of oil/week,more in cases appling everyday/week. Grade 2&3 in seen in majority of cases with acne 60% of patients had forehead acne

Observation Discussion A great variety of chemicals can induce an acneiform eruption upon contact with human skin. The lesions are close set rather uniform,closed comedones with strict follicular keratinization In India use of vegetable oils, coconut oil , almond oil, olive oil and rye oil is popular Oil forms an occlusive film over the applied area and causes comedogenesis and aggravation of acne in the acne prone areas Oil also stimulates proliferation of P. Acnes Oil contains lipids. Lipid is the scientific term for the fatty acids and steroids
