Decision –Making, Mental Emotional Health

Standards and Objectives Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. (NHES #1) Describe the interrelationships of physical, mental/emotional, and social health when reviewing the health triangle. (1.8.2) Define and understand the terms risk behaviors, precautions, and decision-making. (1.8.5) Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health. (NHES #6) Practice decision-making skills by working through situations; set two health related goals. (6.8.2) Assess personal health practices by completing a wellness “survey” (6.8.1.)

Health and Wellness Ch 1 Lesson 1 Health: combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. Health Triangle – no side is more or less important than the other. Balanced! 3 sides – Physical, Mental/Emotional, Social Interrelated – each side affects the other two sides

3 sides of the Health Triangle Physical – exercise, diet/nutrition, hygeine-cleanliness, drug-free, rest/sleep Mental/emotional – accept self, express feelings in a healthy way, develop good decision making skills, learning, handle stress Social – get along with others, work with others, friends, give and get support

Health vs. Wellness Wellness: an overall state of well-being, or total health Think of health as a snapshot – how you are at a certain time – and wellness as the slideshow or movie – how you are over a period of time.

Taking Responsibility for your health Ch. 1 Lesson 2 Health choices you make everyday Factors that affect your health that you have little to no control over Heredity Environment Available Health Care Your behavior can still affect the above factors – meaning you can behave in such a way to limit how much heredity, the environment or available health care affect your health. Heredity of heart disease, polluted environment…

Health education provides you with the knowledge and skills. You need to believe that making good choices and developing good health habits can affect your health. If don’t believe doing something will help you, you wont change habits. Health education provides you with the knowledge and skills. If you don’t have the knowledge and skills, you won’t know what needs to be changed, why, or how to change.

Risk behavior Ch. 1 Lesson 3 Possibility that an action may cause injury or harm to you or others. Do teens take more risks? Are some risks necessary or reasonable? What precautions can you take to make risks safer? Death among children and adolescents URL of this page: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001915.htm Accidents are, by far, the leading cause of death among children and adolescents.

Decision Making The process of making a choice or finding a solution (for major decisions) Six steps in the Decision-Making process 1. State the situation 2. List the options/choices 3. Weigh the possible outcomes 4. Consider your values (beliefs) 5. Make a decision and act 6. Evaluate the decision

Goal Setting Ch. 1 Lesson 4 Why set goals? Help give your life direction. Increase self-esteem. Keep you focused. Help you use your time, energy, and other resources wisely. Help identify what you want out of life.

Setting goals On your cornell notes page, (preferably the bottom in the summary) list two health related goals for yourself to be accomplished with-in this school year. Try to make them measurable and specific. For example: I want to lose weight. By December, through diet and exercise, I will lose 4% of my total body fat. I will work on increasing my vertical from it’s current 14 inches to 17+ inches by the end of volleyballl season.

Mental Emotional Health Learning Goals Students will explain how self-esteem affects total health. Students will identify ways to cope with stress. Students will name some important mental health problems and discuss their causes. Students will list warning signs of depression and suicide.

Mental Emotional Health Ch. 3 Lesson 1 The ability to accept yourself and others, adapt to and cope with emotions, and deal with the problems and challenges you meet in life. When you are mentally healthy, you keep your physical and social health more balanced. How does self-esteem affect total health?

Improving Self-esteem Mental / emotional health has it’s ups and downs, but improving it and self-esteem is a skill that you can learn just like a skill in a sport. Motivate yourself – set goals Know and manage your feelings Change your thoughts and behavior Improving self-esteem – Focus on your strengths Accept constructive criticism Learn from your mistakes

Stress Ch. 3 Lesson 3 Stress is your body’s physical response to change Positive Negative – distress (stress that interferes with your life and makes you unhappy or sick). Physical fatigue (exhaustion)- headaches, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, lower immune system Psychological fatigue-can wear you out as much as physical and can cause physical symptoms

Ways to deal with stress To handle stress, you need to know what causes it (stressors). Ways to cope Relax, exercise Think positively, planning and preparing Defense mechanisms – many can be unhealthy (not dealing with stressors appropriately) when used as long-term solutions to stress.

Mental Health Problems Ch. 3 Lesson 4 Sometimes, people are unable to cope with certain things by themselves and it starts to affect other areas of their life. Most common: Anxiety Disorders Mood Disorders We need to think of mental health like anything else we go to the doctor for.
