Le “bonne pratiques” UNIMED UNIMED has gathered about 14 “bonnes pratiques” from its university members related to the conference’s topic, namely from: Italy, France, Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine, Turkey. UNIMED choice is for the best practice of University of Bologna: BIOTECH-MA project.

Aperçu du projet BIOTECH-MA: Programme: Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnership Durée: 24 mois Pays bénéficiaires: Italy, Spain, Hungary, France and the UK, one Research Center (CNR) and a Biotechnology Industry Park, with the direct involvement and collaboration of the European biotech industry. Chef de fil: Université de Bologna

Objectives du projet The main objective of Biotech-Ma project “Teaching biotechnology for human health: from the bench to the market” is the development of an innovative multiple/joint second cycle degree programme in medical biotechnology Taking into account the needs and the opportunities that characterize today’s labour market, the project will address the market mismatch between skills required and skills offered by gradutes in Europe providing students with both traditional scientific competences and managerial/entrepreneurial skills (marketing, management, communication, ethics, ...), to make them globally competitive and facilitate their work placement in the European and international business arena.

Pourquoi cette pratique BIOTECH-MA? The industrial sector is directly involved in the project partnership, thanks to the 2 relevant industrial partners, and in the development of course structure, through the: on-line surveys, consultation, direct participation in the Summer School and in the Multiplier Events organized by the Project.

Pourquoi cette pratique BIOTECH-MA? An ad hoc questionnaire has been already distributed to a representative sample of 79 European biotech companies to understand what their needs are and what specific transversal and managerial/entrepreneurial skills are required in graduates. In other words, to better define the educational and training objectives of the new curriculum The involvement of companies and enterprises has also allowed the project to address another important lack identified by the market representatives in the scientific paths: a traditional theoretical approach has to be mixed with a more hands-on-practice approach.

Visibilité – Dissemination strategy The dissemination strategy has been designed to allow the project to reach as many stakeholders as possible in the Biotechnology industrial partners are responsible to involve and activate the biotechnology enterprises and stakeholders with the local support of the academic partners. Surveys, multiplier events and participation to international conferences to reach a broad number of stakeholders at international level.

Outils de communication et visibilité Project’s Website: that will become the official website of the new multiple/joint master, where students will be able to enrol, sign up for the exams and find all the necessary information Involvement of the institutional websites and the social media channels of the participating institutions, used to promote the project events Capitalisation event in Bologna to inform all relevant stakeholders about the existence of this Master programme

Durabilité The sustainability of the project results will be ensured first of all by the partner institutions through the inclusion in the official catalogue and accreditation of the second cycle degree programme in some of the participating universities The promotional plan and the appropriate positioning of the programme into the international educational market (i.e. appropriate definition of targeted students and tuition fees) will be the core element of the sustainability plan Specific promotional and fund-raising strategies, addressed to local and international stakeholders are being put in place Summer school which will be offered for free to enrolled students, will be a fund raising tool when it will be also offered to fee payers professionals Search of other sources for scholarships will be part of the sustainability plan activity and will be a joint effort of academic and industrial/research partners.

Transferabilité de l’initiative The methodology of involvement of business stakeholders in the design and development of a second cycle degree master programme addressing this market mismatch is transferable in other countries/regions. International Summer sSchool and business-oriented modules into traditional biotechnology degrees, as well as the hands-on-practice approach respond to the widespread need to foster employability of Biotech graduates The Master curriculum has the potential to be transferred and exploited in other European and non EU countries

Caracter innovant de l’initiative Role of the private industrial sector is no longer occasional, but fully integrated in the development of higher education training paths Design of the learning outcomes of the third “business semester” (30 ECTS) of the 120 ECTS programme Summer schools integrated in the programme foresee teaching activities for industrial experts and guest speakers from the market Students will have the opportunity to study and do internships in at least three different European countries during their second cycle degree path

Short-term effects Long-term effects Impact Students will benefit from a multinational and innovative degree programme that provides both a technical lab teaching and substantial cross-training elements students will learn firsthand what needs and opportunities are to be found in the life science employment Short-term effects Faculty members will benefit from the project in terms of new teaching methods & networks that will improve the quality and the organization of biotechnical courses Professionals from corporate partners will increase their trade exchanges and their contact with research universities Long-term effects

Facilité d’implémentation Due to the high level of innovation embedded in the project objectives (a multidisciplinary and international curriculum development matching scientific and business skills as well as theoretical and practical approach) and methodologies (full involvement of industrial partners and stakeholders in the curriculum design and development, in teaching activities during the summer schools, in the thesis and internships objectives and implementation) the project is highly complex, thus the institutional commitments and contributions of all partners are the main and strong guarantee to overcome administrative and/or organization critical issues.
