Objectives and Curriculum Cultural/Historical Creative/Performance Critical/Responsive

Cultural/Historical Understanding the history of music Learning about music from other cultures Canadian content Making meanings and drawings connections to other subject areas

ACTIVITY!

? ? Listening Critically “A Movement for Rosa” - by Mark Camphouse “The Rite of Spring” - by Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring is and was one of the most controversial works from the 20th century and in music history. Igor Stravinsky wrote the music for this ballet in 1912-1913 and was performed with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky to an astonished Parisian crowd in May of 1913. Rite of Spring was the first piece in the “Primitivism” movement, where modern composers sought to imitate nature and the brutality of primitive cultures. It was a ballet without classical dance and it was full of dissonance and ostinato rhythms that were not only unheard of but “booed” during the premiere performance. Today, it is looked at as a very groundbreaking and influential work. “A Movement for Rosa” - by Mark Camphouse Mark Camphouse is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Radford University in Virginia. He was born in Chicago in 1954 and received his formal education at Northwestern University. Camphouse's published and award-winning works have led to his being recognized as an important composer of serious music for the symphonic band medium. A Movement for Rosa was commissioned in 1992 by the Florida Bandmasters Association. The quasi-tone poem was written to honour the civil rights heroine, Rosa Parks. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Parks is regarded as the "Mother to a Movement." ? ?

Creative/Performance Learning to work as a team Learning to play an instrument/sing Become familiar with performance practice Learn to express yourself Have fun!

ACTIVITY!

Critical/Responsive Learning to listen with critical ears Interpreting sounds and giving appropriate responses Being able to be flexible and learn new things Draw upon technology to enhance expression

Music Technology Notation software (Sibelius, Finale, etc.) Recording software (ProTools, Cubase, Cakewalk, SmartMusic, etc.) Internet technologies and video games (YouTube, iTunes, Flash Music Games, Online Ear Training, Rock Band, etc.)

Teachers Appeal Can be included in other subjects Potential for cross- disciplinary collaboration Non-Appeal Seen as a waste of time (non-testable subject) Colleagues in other subject areas may not be able to give critical feedback

Students Appeal Teachers are learners (they can relate to them) Group-based Fun/different Potential for extra- curricular Accepting of differences Non-Appeal Have to make choices (takes up time) May be labelled by peers Expectations for practice

Community Appeal Musicals/concerts/pep rallies Bringing in professionals to do clinics and workshops Able to go out to the community Bring recognition to city and school Non-Appeal Cost for students and community

The Place of Music in Schools Normally, not visible! It's often the first subject to be put on the chopping block but is very applicable to many other subject areas. For example, students can learn other languages (i.e. Allegro, Dolce, Langsam, Grave, etc.), history plays a large role, music essentially is math and sound is produced via physics and physiology working together.

Conclusion “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” - Plato
