Yuva Development Programme Music and Meditation Yuva Development Programme

What is Meditation? Meditation is a state of spontaneous, effortless thoughtless awareness. It is a state of profound, deep peace that occurs when the mind is calm and silent, yet completely alert. The state can be consistently achieved through daily Sahajayoga practice.

What is not “Meditation”? It is not concentration. It does not involve loss of control over one’s awareness. Sounds, voices, colors and involuntary movements have nothing to do with meditation or spirituality. Exercises, such as postures and breathing, do not constitute meditation. Does not involve any mental effort.

How did our great music system ORIGINATE? The earliest origins of Indian Classical Music can be found in Samaveda dating back to 1500 BC. "Our classical music in India was based on AUM. Even at Kundalini when it reaches here at the Vishuddhi Chakra it makes all the sounds, “am, aam, em, eem, um, oom, rim, reem, lrim, lreem, aye, ayee, ao, aou, ang, ah” All these sixteen vowels are coming from the sixteen chakras or the sub-chakras or the petals of this Vishuddhi Chakra. These are Bija mantras of the Vishuddhi Chakra. All the vowels come from here and when we sing dirty songs we spoil this chakra Vishuddhi. -Vishuddhi Chakra, Delhi (India), Public Programme, 2 February 1983 “Music has come out of God’s love to us. Anything that is not for God’s love is not music. It’s always all the music was in the praise of God. And that’s why Mohammed Sahib said that all the music should be in the praise of God. This music force has come to us to praise God, that’s all, for nothing else, [not] for doing all kinds of dirty things and singing all kinds of funny things” -Vishuddhi Chakra, Delhi (India), Public Programme, 2 February1983

How did our great music system ORIGINATE? It’s so scientific; our music system is extremely scientific because it was taken in the form of this music with actually the Kundalini moving into different these sapta swaras (meaning: 7 notes). These seven swaras are built in our seven chakras: It start with sa, then, re, ga, ma – Mother, pa, dha, ni. My name also starts with ni. These seven swaras are built in with seven notes and there are vrikrutis, vrikrut swaras, which are the other, what you call, chakras [so] that we have to make about twelve swaras. But nobody understood the real meaning of music.” -Vishuddhi Chakra, Delhi (India), Public Programme, 2 February 1983 Music has a way of carrying these Divine Vibrations, but music has to be Divine also. The music which is erotic or something very base or related to something very ugly doesn't work out. But if it is a proper music of a proper type then it communicates. But that discretion only comes after realization. What you enjoy there is the vibrations. You feel the cool vibrations and you start enjoying it...The cool vibrations soothe you down.“ -H.H Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

Why do we need music, especially classical music for meditation? Music helps us to stay in and establish the meditative state. Music helps to develop ananya bhakti. There are seven Musical Notes(frequencies) Sa,Re,Ga,Ma,Pa,Dha,Ni,Sa. Each correspond to one chakra. When we listen to and sing the notes it has an healing effect on the chakras. Music helps to attain the state of pure bliss and joy. Different ragas are different combination of notes which have positive effects on different chakras, as the frequencies of some specific ragas resonate with that of the specific chakras giving us the joy at that chakra. Music(both Indian and Western Classical) has successfully demonstrated its healing and medicinal qualities in assisting in treatment of wide range of diseases, more commonly being hypertension, stress e.t.c.

What are the basic notes IN Indian Classical Music? Indian classical music has seven basic notes, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni, with five interspersed half-notes, resulting in a 12-note scale. Ragas are specific combinations of the 12 notes to form a continuous melody. Swar Short Representation Animal from which it is derived Sadja Sa Cry of the peacock Rishabha Re Lowing of the bull Gaandhaara Ga Bleating of a goat Madhyama Ma Call of the heron Panchama Pa Call of the cuckoo Dhaivata Dha Neighing of the horse Nishaada Ni Trumpeting of the elephant
