Mission Planning Concepts Stubbe F. Hviid Aug 17-18 2010

Overall Mission Planning Concepts The overall mission planning concept is the organization scheme designed to: Ensure that the primary mission goals are met Ensure that changes in mission state are handled Ensure that serendipitous science can be done Ensure that the mission timeline is being filled!

Traditional Flow for High Interactivity Missions Long term planning cycle (LTP) Strategic Timeline Mid term planning cycle (MTP) Short term planning cycle (STP) Tactical Timeline DL UL DL UL DL UL DL UL DL UL DL UL DL UL DL UL S/C Timeline

Separation of planning cycle responsibilities (I) Long Term Planning (LTP) The global view Ensuring that the global mission/instrument goals are met Staffed by PI’s and Project Scientist and Chaired by a Long Term Planning Lead (Project Scientist?)

Separation of planning cycle responsibilities (II) Mid Term Planning (MTP) Orbit planning/selection Ensuring that multi “day” activities are scheduled correctly Handling contingency planning MTP responsible for delivering a baseline activity plan at the start of every STP cycle Staffed by representatives of the SWT/SOC and the flight ops teams + LTP representatives

Separation of planning cycle responsibilities (III) Short Term Planning (STP) Tactical process Running synchronized with the uplink/downlink cycle Ensuring that validated/safe OIOR’s are implemented and uplinked/executed Staffed out of the SWT/Instrument Eng/SOC and the flight ops teams

Definition of terms Activity Plan Command Plan High level plan which defines time slots for single or multi-instrument activities Provides high level modeling input for resources Command Plan Tele-command implementation of the Activity plan Provides direct input to the mission timeline

Staffing (STP) Formal roles: Short Term Science Lead (SSL) (Recruited from SWT/SOC) Responsible science integrity of plan implementation Responsible for delivering a consistent activity plan for the implementation phase which fits in the predicted resource envelope Short Term Mission Lead (SML) (Recruited from the MOC) Responsible for mission safety Responsible for delivering a validated command sequence (OIOR) for execution on the S/C Documentarian (DOC) Responsible for documenting what is going on Science theme group leads (STL) (plural) Responsible for providing input to plan from a science theme point of view Instrument Operation Leads (IL) (plural) Responsible for Instrument health Responsible for instrument plan implementation Responsible for instrument Operational Requests

Formal meetings (STP) Kickoff Meeting Activity Plan Approval Meeting Purpose: Start the STL cycle Clarify S/C+instrument health and predicted resource envelope Present baseline plane coming from the MTL Staffed by SSL+IL+STL + (TBD) Chaired by SSL Activity Plan Approval Meeting Purpose: Deliver consistent activity plan that fits in the resource envelope ready for implementation Staffed by SSL+IL+STL+SML Command Approval Meeting Purpose: Formal signoff on the implementation and validation of the implemented timeline. Staffed by SML+IL Chaired by SML
