All About the Countryside

Countryside Recreation Countryside Rules Countryside Employment

Countryside Recreation How many leisure pursuits and hobbies can you think of that people do in the countryside?

13

Countryside Rules Can you really go anywhere in Scotland?

Agree or disagree? You have enjoyed a long walk with your dog off the lead and are very tired. You look at the map and find a short cut home across a farm field which you decide to take. There are sheep in the field but no lambs. You know that your dog is fine off the lead and will not chase them so you walk across the field.

Agree or disagree? You are interested in bird watching. It is spring time and you know a local area where there will be many birds making nests and breeding on the ground so you go to look for them. You let your dog run and leap around the area while you are watching the birds but always make sure that you keep it on a long lead.

Agree or disagree? You are disabled and travel around in a wheelchair. Your wheelchair is specially designed to go ‘off road’ so you decide to test it out by going across the middle of a ploughed farm field.

Agree or disagree? You go for a bike ride on a very narrow cycle path. There are many walkers on the path and it is very busy so you dismount and walk until the path widens and then get on your bike again.

Agree or disagree? You take your dog for a walk. You plan to go around a fruit field following a path but it is very muddy so you walk across the middle of it instead because it is drier.

Agree or disagree? You and some friends enjoy a picnic by a river. When it is time to leave you collect your rubbish but cannot find a bin to put it in. It is quite a smelly bag but you take it home with you anyway.

Agree or disagree? Your friend has told you that you can camp anywhere in Scotland so you plan an overnight camping trip with them. You see a large country house with a huge garden. You decide to camp in it so you put up your tent and stay the night. You are careful to be quiet.

Agree or disagree? You and a friend are camping in a moorland full of heather and decide to light a very small fire as it is quite cold.

Agree or disagree? You and some friends decide to have a takeaway barbeque in the local park. The litter bins are over flowing with rubbish so when you have finished, you hide all your rubbish under a large rock so that it does not spoil the park for other picnickers.

Agree or disagree? You want to go salmon fishing for the day. Your friend reminds you that it is Sunday so you decide not to go.

Agree or disagree? It is September and you plan a walk up a munro. At the start of the walk is a sign saying ‘Deer Stalking Taking Place’. The stalking is happening exactly where you want to walk. You decide to change your route even though it will make your walk six miles longer.

Countryside Employment How many jobs can you think of that require knowledge of the countryside?
