Discussion- Digital direction September 2016 Kimberly School District

A request for insight & Direction How should we meet the digital needs of our students and staff while meeting the need for security and safety? Teaching digital literacy involves risks. How much risk should we take?

Design thinking- End in Mind Students Should Be Able To: Use digital resources strategically Conduct research Create and present Communicate and collaborate effectively Think critically, solve problems, make decisions

examples Idaho Core 11& 12th grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing feedback, including new arguments or information. Idaho Core 2nd grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.6 With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

examples Idaho Core 8th grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.5 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest. Idaho Core Mathematical Practice: CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically. Mathematically proficient students consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem. These tools might include pencil and paper, concrete models, a ruler, a protractor, a calculator, a spreadsheet, a computer algebra system, a statistical package, or dynamic geometry software. Proficient students are sufficiently familiar with tools appropriate for their grade or course to make sound decisions about when each of these tools might be helpful, recognizing both the insight to be gained and their limitations.

examples ITSE Standard 3b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. Biology 9-10: 9-10.B.1.6.3 Use appropriate technology and mathematics to make investigations. (649.01c)
