CHAPTER VIII - Of Christ the Mediator 3. The Lord Jesus, in His human nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, above measure, having in Him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; in whom it pleased the Father that all fulness should dwell; to the end that, being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truth, He might be thoroughly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and Surety. Which office He took not unto Himself, but was thereunto called by His Father, who put all power and judgment into His hand, and gave Him commandment to execute the same.

An M.E.L. for the One Mediator and Surety Sanctified Especially anointed with the Holy Spirit Having all wisdom and knowledge Having the full indwelling of the Father Holy Harmless Undefiled Full of grace and truth Having all power and judgment in His hand With the commandment to execute the office of mediator and surety

CHAPTER VIII - Of Christ the Mediator 4. This office the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake; which that He might discharge, He was made under the law, and did perfectly fulfill it; endured most grievous torments immediately in His soul, and most painful sufferings in His body; was crucified, and died, was buried, and remained under the power of death, yet saw no corruption. On the third day He arose from the dead, with the same body in which He suffered, with which also He ascended into heaven, and there sitteth at the right hand of His Father, making intercession, and shall return, to judge men and angels, at the end of the world.

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours (or which was also) in Christ Jesus,6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped (or held on to for advantage),7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant (or slave), being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11

Controversy of the Week!

“Nothing but the Blood of Jesus...”

Why didn’t Jesus go to the cross immediately after he was born into this world?

What is “the law?” How did Jesus fulfill the law?

Active vs. Passive Fulfillment of the Law Active, adj. [Latin activus.] 1. That has the power or quality of acting; that contains the principle of action, independent of any visible external force. Passive, adj [Latin passivus, from passus, patior, to suffer.] 1. Suffering; not acting, receiving or capable of receiving impressions from external agents. 2. Unresisting; not opposing; receiving or suffering without resistance; as passive obedience; passive submission to the laws. Webster’s American Dictionary of the English Language (1828) http://webstersdictionary1828.com/

Overheard in the TNPC Narthex... “Scripture only teaches the imputation of Christ’s passive obedience, not his active obedience.” “Such fine distinctions owe more to systematic theology than the authorial intent of exegetical theology.”

Active and Passive Fulfillment of the Law Active fulfillment: Lived and died in accordance with the whole of the Mosaic Law: moral, e.g., justice, respect, and sexual conduct ceremonial, e.g., sacrifices, feasts, dietary restrictions civil, e.g., restitution for a man gored by an ox Contrasted Mosaic Law with its Pharisaical perversions Fulfilled most OT Messianic prophecies By virtue of his federal headship, caused His perfect righteousness to be imputed to us.

Active and Passive Fulfillment of the Law Atoned for our sins under the Mosaic Law: immersed Himself in a sea of evil and sacrilege served the will of the Father in every circumstance endured a life of utter humility and service and, at the end, the most extreme suffering paid the ultimate penalty under the Mosaic law: death By virtue of his federal headship, bore the ultimate penalty for our transgressions of Mosaic law imputed to Him
