NC perspective towards WIS GPRS – option for regional connectivity PMD Structure of Talk Brief about PMD NC perspective towards WIS GPRS – option for regional connectivity

Main areas of operation Aviation Meteorological Service Flood forecast and warning services. Earthquake data and seismic information services Farmer's Weather Bulletin and Warning Services. Public Weather and advisory services Marine Meteorological Forecasting and Warning Services: Tropical Cyclone Warning Service Air Pollution Monitoring Services Research activities in Meteorology, Agricultural Meteorology Hydrology and allied fields Astronomical services Training Institute in Meteorology and Geophysics:

(NMHS perspective towards NC for WIS) PMD WIS Implementation (NMHS perspective towards NC for WIS)

WIS Implementation Plan The Implementation of WIS is under study in consultation with KMA and the plan to implement WIS would be finalized soon. However at present no software/hardware is available related to flexible data discovery, access and retrieval (DAR) services.

Existing GTS Setup Two dedicated 64kbps TCP/IP lease circuit between Karachi-New Delhi and Karachi-Tehran are in operation for the GTS. The GTS has been supported by MESSIR-COMM provided by M/S Corobor Systems France in a WMO assisted project.

Existing GTS Setup The Karachi‑New Delhi circuit is exchanging Meteorological data (Synop, Pilot, Temps & other) by TCP socket and BUFR data using FTP services. Whereas Karachi-Tehran Circuit is serving via FTP only. The BUFR data is being generated using indigenous software.

Existing GTS Setup The following data is being exchange at present. Serface data Synop (three hourly observations a day) Metar (hourly/ half hourly observations) Temps/Radio Sonde (12 hourly observation a days) Pilot data (6 hourly Observatons). About 18MB data received from two International Circuits and 2MB local data being exchanged. Therefore 20MB data collected on daily basis. All data is in alphanumeric and binary (BUFR) format.

Expected benefits from WIS NWP, METARS, SYNOPS, PPAA, PPBB, TAFS, GRIB, Warnings (Cyclones, Tsunamies) Satellite derived products (precipitation, snow, temperature SST, animated cloud imageries, precipitable water, Fog identification etc Data exchange in the world through the GISC would be around 18-20 MB per day

Establishment of NC – NMHSs needs The important issue is to chalk out necessary requirements / benchmarks that must be an integral part of NC for an efficient NMHS. For example    Computing power 10 GHs ( 3 PCs each of 3 GHs dual core) Internet connection 512k - 1MB/s preferably fibre optics Personnels Computer technicians (10), supervisors (2) ………………………………..   Such type of information would help NMHSs administrators to finalize arrangements to meet the requirements and declare that the NMHSs is ready to adept to WIS.

Establishment of NC – NMHSs needs

Establishment of NC – NMHSs needs In the context, we would like to reform the VPN PP focusing on WIS specific applications to meet Member's operational requirements The new name of VPN will the "WIS Application Pilot Project". The lead members, i.e. BoM, CMA, HKO, JMA and NZ MetService agreed on the reforming project

(GPRS – option for regional connectivity) PMD WIS Implementation (GPRS – option for regional connectivity)

Status Of GTS connectivity and Proposal for Multi-Layer Connectivity for Critical information Still the GTS connectivity status remains the same as that of 2009. Bhutan, Afghanistan and Iraq are out of GTS Keeping in view the increased intensity and frequency of natural hazards, it is highly important that UN System put in place a multi-layered mechanism so that related information and warnings reach to vulnerable communities.

Status Of GTS connectivity and Proposal for Multi-Layer Connectivity for Critical information PMD has tested a communication device that can help establish immediate linkage between any number of nodes for dissemination of information /Warnings through GPRS communication.

Simplifying the Process The main components that make up our systems can be broken down into three: Data Providers Data Compiler/Store Data Consumer Data Station User Data Station User Head Office Data Station User WMO Provider User The project we were undertaking would need to address the data transport need which currently existed between the data providers and data store but would go further by also looking at making this data available to users within the department and external to the department. The idea would be to have open access data which could be served up in any form without manual intervention. PMD SIMPLIFIED DATA COMPONENTS

SUMMARY It is proposed that as an outcome of this workshop, a summary of needs may be chalked out for NC It may be farwarded to NMHSs heads for implementation in 2013 through WMO A Toolkit may be developed by GISCs for operational NCs GISCs may arrange workshops in 2013 and share toolkit with NC GPRS /EDGE technology may be explored as one of option.

Thank you! Any Questions?
