Discussion Points: Mission Summer Programs Survey Results What to Expect Changes to our Program Team Format Coaches Tournaments Uniforms Tryouts Corporate Sponsorship Spirit Wear

Eagan Basketball Association Board 22 Board Members help run Traveling and In-House Basketball

Mission of Eagan Basketball Association - Traveling EBA strives to provide an opportunity for boys & girls in grades 4th – 8th to play a more competitive game of basketball. Emphasis is placed on player development, sportsmanship and teamwork. This is accomplished through establishing competitive teams, who are led by knowledgeable coaches, with a goal of developing players to be ready to compete at the next highest level.

Summer Programs Open Gym 10,000 shot club This past summer, we again held our Open Gym Night at ECC. We had 162 kids register this year. 10,000 shot club We continued our 10K Shot Club. We had 12 kids complete the challenge. We are continuing to improve the website and provide more content so look at the “Camps & Clinics” page for other opportunities during the summer and season

Survey Results (251 responses out of 284 players) Provided each team enough practice time 85% agree, 6% neutral, 9% disagree Parent meeting before tryouts is informative 79% agree, 19% neutral, 2% disagree Playing time policy is fair; equal for 4th - 6th, 40% minimum/60% maximum for 7th & 8th 85% agree, 5% neutral, 10% disagree Tryout process was consistent with parent meeting explanation 67% agree, 26% neutral, 7% disagree Team size 8 players – 17%, 9 players – 33%, 10 players – 50%

Survey Results (continued) Outside, Independent evaluators should be continued 84% agree, 16% disagree Tryout drills and scrimmages allowed players to demonstrate skills to evaluators 91% agree, 9% disagree Paid coaches for 7th & 8th grade with increase in fees of $200-$300 41% agree, 59% disagree Over-night tournament other than Rochester 82% agree, 18% disagree

What to Expect Practices Practices start in mid-October and continue through beginning of March Usually two, 1.25-1.5 practices per week Time, day and location vary Players are expected to be at all practices except for conflicts with school, family, church and illness If players miss practice for other reasons, our bylaws state that coaches can deviate from playing time rules and deduct an appropriate amount of playing time Practice is where your child and team will improve the most Please notify coaches as soon as possible if your child will miss practice

What to Expect Games Tournaments Good sportsmanship is #1 priority – toward refs, coaches, teammates, other teams and parents Playing time rules are 50-50 for 4th-6th, and 60-40 for 7th-8th Bring up sensitive issues with coaches at an appropriate time, away from athletes, preferably next day Tournaments Generally 1-2 tournaments per month Tournaments in the metro area, excluding Rochester State tournament location is undetermined until pools are made All tournaments are fundraisers for their programs and will charge entry fees of $4-$10 per person

What to Expect Rochester Tournament Girls (Feb 25 - 26) Boys (Mar 4 - 5) Grade State Tournament Girls (Mar 4 - 5) 580 teams Boys (Mar 11 - 12) 914 teams Largest youth basketball event in the nation

Changes to our Program Last season observations, results from the parent survey and feedback from the post-season coaches meeting have prompted some changes for the upcoming and future seasons Tryouts – closed to parents and families - only athletes, independent evaluators, potential head coaches, court assistants and necessary board members will be allowed in the gym Spirit Wear – same rep as high school and new apparel packages Gym Space – adding Faithful Shepherd 4th grade – removing one tournament from the schedule and adding extra training sessions with Minnesota School of Basketball – still will participate in 8 tourneys 4th grade boys – planning on an A, B and C team Grade State Tournament included upfront in schedule

Team Format Unfortunately we don't always get an even distribution of players trying out at each grade and gender We look at historical tryout numbers, talent level, registration numbers, and available coaching pool prior to tryouts to develop a plan We reserve the right to change the plan during tryouts based on actual tryout numbers and the related talent We may add a team for a grade/gender if tryout numbers, talent level, and coaching pool support it Conversely, we may drop a team if the numbers, talent level, or coaching pool do not support it

Team Format Standard team size for 4th grade – 10 players per team Standard team size for 5th-8th – 9, 9, 10, 10 Board votes to determine any deviations from the standard Boys registration numbers 4th grade: 30 5th grade: 36 6th grade: 45 7th grade: 32 8th grade: 38

Team Format Girls registration numbers 4th grade: 11 5th grade: 22

Coaches Boys coach candidate numbers 4th grade: 3 5th grade: 3

Coaches Girls coach candidate numbers 4th grade: 1 5th grade: 3

Coach & Parent Workshop All coaches and parents are encouraged to attend one of two free workshops on Wednesday, September 14th from 6:00-8:00 or Thursday, September 15th from 6:30-8:30 in the Oaks Room at the Eagan Community Center. Positive Coaching Alliance will run this 2 hour presentation. National Advisory Board Cheryl Reeve – MN Lynx Head Coach Phil Jackson – 11 time NBA champion coach Steve Kerr – former NBA player and coach of Golden State Warriors

Eagan Tournament Alex Buslee & Heather Redetzke, Co-Tournament Directors Scott Hull, At Large Concessions Susan Johnson, At Large Vendors & Awards

Eagan Tournament 28th year of the Eagan Run-N-Gun Classic Boys and girls tournament on November 4th, 5th, and 6th Locations are Eagan HS, Dakota Hills MS, Blackhawk MS, Eagan Community Center and St. Thomas Academy Eagan players get a family pass for free entrance to tournament Entry fees: $7 adult, $5 school age and seniors, Age 5 and under free EMTs at all sites We like to be good hosts, so if your team is playing please offer to keep the official scoresheet during the game

Eagan Tournament Sign up for a DIBS session to work a shift during the tournament – directions for sign up will be sent out as it gets closer We will run our own concessions which creates more volunteer opportunities and is a great chance for us to raise additional money Volunteer shifts will be released at the same time as brackets so you can try to limit conflicts between your shift and child’s games Generally shifts run about 4-5 hours

Uniforms Bought new uniforms for all girls and boys teams 2 years ago Plan to use the same set of uniforms for 4-5 years Only wear them for tournaments…not for practices or school Take care not to misplace them – you will forfeit your $100 deposit required at tryouts Wash in cold water and line dry

Tryouts Aaron Huston, Tryout Coordinator Melissa Cherney, Assistant Tryout Coordinator

Tryouts Players must wear plain T-shirts – without their name or past basketball team/camp/clinic info Bring water bottle Bring $100 check payable to Eagan Traveling Basketball to tryouts.  Checks are destroyed at the end of the season when the uniforms are returned and cross checked to ensure volunteer hours at the tournament have been fulfilled.   Arrive 30 minutes prior to tryout start time; get penny and take with you for the next days. If you wash the penny, please do not dry in the dryer – line dry only! Please be prompt as we are on a tight schedule. Only athletes, independent evaluators, head coach candidates, court assistants and necessary board members will be allowed in the gym.

Tryouts On pooling days, all athletes will be evaluated and scored by outside, independent evaluators. Coaching candidates will be attending tryouts to evaluate players for their potential teams but will not be involved in the pooling process. Coaches have previously been interviewed and are ranked by the interview committee. Evaluators do not know how head coach candidates are ranked. Player scores and coach ranking are completely independent from each other. After scoring is complete, athletes are placed in pools. There are as many pools as the number of teams for each grade. (4 pools for 4 teams, 5 pools for 5 teams, etc.)

Tryouts The number of athletes in Pool 1 is determined by that team’s number of players, plus 2 more athletes. Pool 2 and following will have that team’s number of players. For example, if Team 1 will have 9 players, then 11 players will be in Pool 1. If Team 2 has 9 players, then 9 will be in that pool. The highest ranked coach from the athletes in a particular pool will be named the coach for that team. Any athletes in a pool that are not chosen for that team, automatically are placed on the next highest team. For example, athletes in Pool 1 that are not on Team 1 are automatically placed on Team 2. Athletes may move up or down one pool. If a coach wants to pull a player up one pool, a valid reason must be documented and approved by the tryout director and lead independent evaluator.

Tryouts The highest score an athlete can attain is 100 points. Scores are determined as follows: Shooting off the dribble: 1 – 7 points Shooting off the pass: 1 – 7 points Ball-handling skills: 1 – 7 points Rebounding skills: 1 – 7 points Attitude and Effort: 1 – 4 points Defensive Skills: 1 – 10 points 3 vs. 3 play: 1 – 25 points 5 vs. 5 play: 1 – 25 points Free Throws: 1 – 8 points

Tryouts In the event of a tie, the independent evaluators will discuss and determine where athletes are pooled. If available, the prior year coach evaluations may be used to gather more information. Teams will be posted on the web site on the Wednesday evening following tryouts. ETB prefers for all Eagan athletes to learn the outcome of tryouts after the school day is over. ETB appreciates all coaches and parents help in this matter.
