Erika Smallridge Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge Manager Welcome Introduction Day Erika Smallridge Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge Manager

The UK needs more Engineers! Tomorrow’s Engineers… We work with young people every year across the UK. There are lots of useful videos and information about careers at: tomorrowsengineers.org.uk/ EngineeringUK… A not for profit organisation, working in partnership with the engineering community to promote the vital role of engineers and engineering to society. engineeringuk.com/ We run the biggest Free STEM event in the UK! thebigbangfair.co.uk/

Supporters "Creating Opportunities for Disadvantaged Young Talent” The EEP aims to boost the number of talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to consider pursuing careers in engineering.  It is hoped the initiative will reignite the UK’s status as a world leader in engineering. The Royal Air Force is an organization operating at the leading edge of technology. It is reliant upon a steady stream of young talent interested in pursuing careers in engineering and technology.  With over half the workforce employed as engineers, we are particularly keen to encourage more young women to consider STEM career pathways.

Cool, Fun, the Best CPD Day in a long time!

Congratulations! 270 UK schools applied 145 new schools 250 schools in total Taking part this year

The Brief We’re going to Mars! Its up to you and your team to carry out the first manned mission to Mars! Build a Mars outpost that can support human life and act as a base for future exploration. Going there won’t be easy. Make sure that you have a good crew with you, make sure all your systems are online… and begin the launch. Good Luck!

The Competition The competition will be made up of four sections: The Technical Challenge Remember to be creative with the design! Know the hardware and software inside and out The Space Challenge missions (Programming the EV3) Seven challenges in total Research project and presentation Use as many reliable sources of information as you can. Maybe carry out some primary research Teamwork challenge (details of challenge released on the day) Be prepared for anything!

FAQ’s for the competition You could have two teams of 10 in an in-school competition Choose the best team to go through to your local competition Details of local competitions will be sent soon Build guides for space models are in the space challenge software Only one intelligent brick can be used for the competition Full rules will be sent to you soon.

The Missions - Active Communications Could you use a part of the robot to complete this or does it need an arm extension?

The Missions – Assemble your crew Design a robot extension that could hook the captain. Could this be re-used for another mission? Are you going to use a sensor to pickup the correct figure or will you simply direct/turn the EV3 to pick up the correct figure?

The Missions – Free the MSL robot How are you going to direct the EV3 to the correct starting point of the ramp? Which sensor will be needed to detect the MSL robot? Could the robot arm extension you build be used elsewhere on another mission?

The Missions - Launch the satellite into orbit How will you carry the robot and release the satellite? How will you know when to release the satellite? Will a change of arm extensions be needed here?

The Missions – Return the rock samples Could you re-use an arm extension? Would a sensor be needed?

The Missions - Secure your power supply What kind of robot extension would you need How will you line up your extension arm with the power supply?

The Missions– Initiate launch This must be your final mission on the mat Will you need a new extension arm? Will you need to use a sensor? How will you generate enough power to get the rocket to reach the base station?

Summary Next steps at school Check you have software correctly installed and have received all resources Lesson Plans and PPT will be available to download soon Decide how you will select students and run the programme Arrange Ambassador support with STEMNET or through Erika Look out for our communications and feel free to ask any questions!
