Exercise – Print Composer Project > New Print Composer (name well, you will need more than one name for each project) Add map Add label Add scale Lock layers in the Print Composer after work Output as pdf, svg, png or jpeg As all of QGIS the Print Composer can be a little buggy → save often and have patience.
Exercise – Add map Add a map or two: Layout > Add Map Decide where/how to fit the map frame. Understand the distinction between moving the map (V) and moving the content (C) The lock in the upper right locks only the map in the Print Composer. If you want to prevent accidentally updating the map in the Composer to the main map in the QGIS Desktop, you need to break the connection by: Item Properties > Layers > Lock Layers & Lock styles for layers
Exercise – Add a label or two Layout > Add label Decide whether you want to use the inbuilt formatting functions or use HTML/CSS Add text, style, play with transparency
Exercise – Add a legend Layout > Add legend Note how you can delete and add and style list items in the legend Make sure the legend doesn’t accidentally update (unclick Auto-update)
Exercise – Add scalebar Layout > Add Scalebar Km or miles? Style
Exercise – Add arrow (if needed) Add an arrow which magically points north Layout > Add Image (*NOT* Add Arrow) Find one under Search Directories (Arrow) image rotation > Synch with map
All done? You like it? Lock up all layers Output to your favorite format (try svg if you haven’t) Better crop to content, esp. with SVG
