LC 6: Can we write our own penguin post story? Show the class the email from Sunny and explain that we will be learning about him over the next 6 week. Discuss what we know about meerkats and what we would like to find out. (WW) Research about meerkats: where in the world do they come from? What type of habitat do they have? What do they eat? Children to conduct research about different countries and their environments and whether this would be suitable for a meerkat. Children to create an argument for where they think the best habitat for a meerkat would be. Children will be reading Meerkat Mail. They will be identifying the features of it and will be acting out parts of the story. Children will be drafting and writing their own sunny adventures along the theme of Meerkat Mail. LC3 How could we persuade Sunny to visit our special place? Children will be thinking about the place that we live in. What is special about this place? How can we make it a place that Sunny would want to visit? Children to write a letter to Sunny, persuading him to come and visit Croydon and why. Children to think about their own special place that they would want Sunny to visit. Why do you think he would want to visit it? Children to record all their reasons for Sunny to want to visit it. They will then be sharing with their class their ideas and the rest of the class to vote which one they think is the best. LC4 Do Meerkats use sun block? Why is it important to use sun block? Children to take part in Forest School experiments to see the effects of using sun block and not. Children to write diary entries in the role of Sunny, talking about how he felt when he didn’t have sun block. Children will be sorting and experimenting with different materials. Children will be learning about magnetism and how this works. Children will be learning about the different properties of materials and whether they float of sink. Children will be learning about reversible change. Children will be writing up different parts of experiments, thinking about fair testing and predicting.

Talk about how email is the easiest way. Discuss E safety. (e safety session) Discuss what in informal email/letter would look like? What are the features? Children will be drafting an email to their friends/family. Children will be writing an email in the correct format. To create Meerkat videos of talking animals. Children to explore, plan and create their talking animals and the scripts for what they will say.
