Welcome to John Cabot Academy

Welcome from the Principal Simon White Kate Willis Principal Vice Principal

John Cabot Academy Vision Statement We are: … positive, optimistic and ambitious about the future and the potential of everyone associated with our school. We value difference and see diversity – in all its forms – as adding to the richness of our environment and contributing to our broad world view. We care deeply about the wellbeing of all our people and are willing to work hard to ensure that each and every one of us can make the most of our talents and use them to achieve our goals; whatever they may be. We are energetic and uncompromising in our pursuit of excellence, and recognise that application and commitment are as important in this as natural talent. We are always looking for ways to improve the school and the experience of those who come here – students and staff alike.

Transition Day – Wednesday 21 June A chance to experience a day at JCA To meet students To meet staff Understand our expectations Understand our routines

What do we want for our children? Healthy, Well Qualified and Employable Curious Respectful Collaborative Show Integrity Ambitious Resilient

Encourage and praise hard work At Home and at School…. Aspiration Positive Habits 97% + Attendance Encourage and praise hard work Respectful Behaviour

Parent/carer partnership We need each other Habits, values and positive attitudes brought from home make a huge difference Learning at home is a huge contributor to future success Help your child to have aspiration to succeed into the future and to be hopeful.

The Importance of Excellent Attendance Of students who miss between 10% and 20% of school, (80 -90% attendance) only 35% manage to achieve good qualifications including English and Mathematics. 95% Attendance = Nearly one day off per month 90% Attendance = Two days off per month Parents/carers have a legal duty to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend school on a regular and full-time basis.

At JCA we will not tolerate bullying We have an anti-bullying policy that outlines our approach to all forms of bullying. This includes physical, verbal, racist, homophobic and cyber bullying. We expect that every member of our community has the right to come to school without fear of being threatened, intimidated, mocked or abused. We all have a responsibility to make sure that bullying is not part of life at our school.

Our need to take responsibility

Banned from School weapons, e.g. knives alcohol illegal drugs stolen goods tobacco products, e.g. cigarettes pornographic images (of any kind) fireworks anything that has been, or is likely to be, used to cause injury or commit an offence

Children’s top 10 worries about starting secondary school Being bullied Not making friends Getting lost Homework Not being able to do the work Getting to school and back Not having the right books and equipment Not knowing what to do if there’s a problem Not getting on with the teachers Getting into trouble

Tips for Parents Set a routine for the mornings and after school including what time to set the alarm clock Set a bed time for school days and stick to it Time the journey to school or bus stop Have a couple of practice runs Ensure your child packs their school bag the night before including their equipment, lunch, money, etc Insist on the routine being kept to – it will save hours in the long run!
