Smart Meter Future Rollout Plans by TNB

Smart Grid World-wide Drivers Existing business model imposes multitude of challenges towards sustainability Higher customer demand Require significant technologies and equipment to meet customer demand High dependency on fossil fuels (more than 90% from gas and coal) Reliance on 100% imported coal - issue on energy security Increasing cost of supply Rationalizing energy subsidies and recovery of higher cost of supply Reduction of CO2 emission & low carbon economy Commitment to reduce up to 40% in emission intensity of GDP in year 2020 compared to 2005 levels Increasing pressure on energy security Availability and reliability of energy resources The utilities face multitude of challenges towards sustainability by using existing business model or conventional grid. We live in a world where energy is at the epicentre of modernisation, urbanisation and transformation of the society. Energy, in particular electricity, has become a necessity and enabler in the fabric of our society, insinuating worrying scenario on energy sustainability. This condition has tremendously shaped the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) whose threat towards sustainable energy scenario is real; growth of customer demand, the escalating costs of energy, depleting resources, and climate change are global issues to be dealt with urgency by all.   The energy industry is now at the point of transition to a new era where clean energy will be at a premium, networks need to be flexible to incorporate customers’ demand for greater insight and control over their own consumption and new low-carbon technologies. With the depleting energy resources globally, conventional energy resources will be at a premium. Current rate of fossil fuel usage may lead to larger energy crisis in the future if it is not properly addressed. In addition, it worsens global concerns on climate change and CO2 emission related to fossil fuel consumption for electricity generation. To make the matter worse, the customers are demanding for higher reliability and security of the network. Inevitably, the utilities need to search for an intelligent electricity system that can handle these challenges in a sustainable, reliable and economic way
