What does Safety mean to you? Are you conCERNed about Safety? Que signifie la « Sécurité » pour vous? Are you conCERNed about Safety? La Sécurité, ça vous conCERNe? The SAPOCO 42 (Safety Policy Committee) defines the CERN Safety Policy and aims at improving Safety at CERN and promoting a real Safety culture within the Organization. Safety is a matter of vital importance and is the responsibility of each and every individual. Based on the SAPOCO, « Safety is also a matter of common sense and individual initiative. It is everyone’s duty to ensure that their actions do not put themselves or others in danger and to act without delay to avoid a possible accident.” - Condition or state of being safe; Freedom from danger or hazards; Exemption from hurt, injury, or loss Fully available to function, not hindered Safety management aims at eliminating or minimizing the risks and preventing potential accidents/incidents. To protect your own Health & Safety, you must: Take care of your own health and safety and Take care of the effects of your actions (or lack of) to people around you to people later on: clients, customers, next in line etc. (3) co-operate with others on health and safety, (4) not interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for your health, safety or welfare. (5) Ask question if something is unclear Safety at CERN covers not only Health & Safety but also Environmental Protection.

There are a variety of CERN Safety actors (in Departments, Experiments, buildings…). Today, I do not ask you to remember all, you will know it little by little. This risk assessment must be a systematic examination of all aspects of your work that considers: What could cause injury or harm Whether the hazards could be eliminated and, if not, What preventive or protective measures are, or should be, in place to control the risks Remember: Hazard can be anything – whether work materials, equipment, work methods or practices – that has the potential to cause harm Risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody may be harmed by the hazards STEP 1 – Identifying hazards and those at risks Looking for those things at work that have the potential to cause harm and indentifying the way of exposure STEP 2 – Evaluating and prioritising risks Estimating the existing risks (their severity, probability…) and prioritising them STEP 3 – Deciding on preventive action Identifying the appropriate measures to eliminate or control the risks STEP 4 – taking action Putting in place the preventive and protective measures: Priority must be given to collective Safety measures Personal Protective Equipments must be used when the existing risks cannot be sufficiently limited by technical means of collective protection or work organisation procedures STEP 5 – Monitoring and review The assessment should be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure it remains up to date (e.g. significant changes, findings of an accident or near miss investigation)

Safety Policy : SAPOCO/42 Politique Sécurité: SAPOCO/42 Safety Rules Règles Sécurité The CERN has defined its Policy in matter of Safety. Due to its international status and the fact that it is located part in France and part in Switzerland, the CERN has defined its own Safety rules to comply with European and Host States regulation requirements. Safety rules follow a new classification based on four types of documents: Safety Rules (SR) ; Safety Plans and Safety Procedures (SP) ; General Safety Instructions (GSI) ; Specific Safety Instructions (SSI).
