The Darien Scheme

A Risky Investment In 1699, Scotland decided it would like to invest in a trading company. Many private citizens and the government invested in a company called The Company of Scotland trading to Africa and the Indies was created. Decided to settle a colony, was working for other European countries.

Darien Decided to settle in Darien, modern day Panama. What do your documents tell you happened?

What could Scotland have done differently? Diversify – some money in different places Solicited help from others(partnership) Learned more (knowledge is power) about the area where it wanted to settle How are the people of Scotland similar to some of the Matoff investors?

Result Devastation – Private citizens and members of the government thought Scotland would only be prosperous if they joined with England. This was not a popular solution with many. Became part of the United Kingdom.
