Shmoop Video Who were the two groups of people who founded the colonies? How many colonies were founded for religious reasons? How many colonies were founded for monetary reasons? How were the colonies divided (3 divisions)? Why would the British later regret either not keeping their colonies on “tighter leashes” or sharing the profits better?

English Settlement Standard 8.1-3

Colony An area under the control of the another country

1st permanent English settlement Founded by a joint-stock company I. Jamestown 1st permanent English settlement Founded by a joint-stock company Established in 1607 Goal = MONEY Only 61 out of 500 survived first few years

I. Jamestown Grew into the colony of Virginia Used headright system to attract more settlers Headright system: 50 acres of land given to people who paid their way to the colony. This systems led to large tobacco plantations and fighting over land between the natives and settlers Labor: indentured servants & slaves Indentured servant: a person who works for 5- 7 years in exchange for passage to the New World

II. Self-Government Virginia Company established the House of Burgesses in 1619 Allowed the colonists a voice in colony rules and laws Not totally democratic; the English expected to have some say

Thanksgiving Take about 1 minute to write down everything you know about the 1st Thanksgiving. Think about who was there, what it was about, where it happened, etc…

III. Pilgrims Known as Separatists- they separated from the Church of England 1620: land at Plymouth & sign Mayflower Compact A bedrock of American democracy. It was essentially the 1st constitution and created the idea that people form the government

III. Pilgrims Struggled to survive like Jamestown: only 53 of 102 settlers survived the 1st winter Native Americans helped them plant corn. The Pilgrims survived but life was difficult.

Pilgrims vs. puritans Think about the following question while watching the video: Were the Puritans tolerant or intolerant in terms of religion? What was the effect of their tolerance or intolerance?

IV. Massachusetts Bay 1630: later migration of Puritans- People who wanted to purify the Church of England. This led to their persecution. Government: town meetings where all male church members could vote

Massachusetts Bay Did very well: Lumber, ship building trade Schools based on Bible Everyone had to be a Puritan (intolerant) Large families led to spread of Puritans throughout New England Anne Hutchinson was found guilty of heresy and was banished from Massachusetts.

V. Middle Colonies A variety of settlers and religions: Dutch, Swedes, Puritans, Quakers, and many others. William Penn donated the land in Pennsylvania; became governor but still had an assembly Settled by Quakers- believed people had an “inner light” within themselves. Religious tolerance, good relations w/ natives MOST DIVERSE COLONIES! Economically Prosperous: Established for profit, known as the breadbasket of the colonies.

The Colony of SC True or False: Charleston was one of the wealthiest cities in the English colonies. True or False: SC was a place persecuted protestants could find religious freedom. True or False: Tobacco and indigo helped SC make a lot of money. True or False: Plantation owners in Charleston were poor.

VI. South Carolina Motivation = GOLD King Charles II gave land to 8 Lord Proprietors as payment for a debt. Proprietary colony- the proprietors were in control. Motivation = GOLD Proprietors hoped to profit by charging settlers a quitrent (or tax on the land).

VI. South Carolina John Locke wrote the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina Encouraged religious toleration & created policies to attract settlers

South Carolina Elite: small group of well educated & wealthy citizens A diverse colony- people from France, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, Ireland Religious freedom Government: some degree of democracy Governor Grand Council: Carolina elite, small amount of common people, and proprietors Elite: small group of well educated & wealthy citizens

Development of Plantations Headright system to attract settlers. How did this lead to large plantations? Men with large families and indentured servants received a lot of land Early settlers were from Barbados; brought slavery system Why did SC become wealthy? SC had fertile land and mild climate to help with growing cash crops, waterways helped to transport the crops, and availability of other natural resources as well as cheap labor (slaves).

The Beginnings of the slave trade

Blue Book Reading: pages 20-21 You do NOT have to copy the question; but answer in complete sentences. Why did some Europeans die on the journey over to the new world?  What were settler's reasons for coming to America?  Why did rice grow so well in South Carolina?  Who developed the most efficient way of growing indigo?
