Consolidation of the Nazi State 1933-34. January 1933 30th Jan - Hitler appointed Chancellor. February 1933 27th Feb – Reichstag Fire. Blamed on communists. 28th Feb – Emergency Decree. Suspended constitutional civil rights and gave power to the secret police. Used to repress the KPD. March 1933 5th Mar – elections. Highest turnout ever – 88%. Nazis only got 44% of the vote. 13th Mar – New Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Goebbels appointed head, controlled all media. 24th Mar – Enabling Act. Gave emergency powers to the government for 4 years. Hitler could pass decrees without presidential approval. Was passed by 441 votes to 94, and was renewed in 1938. April 1933 1st Apr – One day boycott of Jewish business. 7th Apr – Law For Restoration Of Professional Civil Service. Administration, courts, schools and universities purged of ‘alien elements’ – Jews and political opponents. June 1933 10th Jun – Employment Law. Set up major public works schemes. July 1933 14th Jul – Law Against Formation of New Parties. KPD and SPD already banned, all other parties had dissolved themselves. This law created the one party state. 20th Jul – Concordat Agreement signed. October 1933 14th Oct – Reichstag dissolved. November 1933 12th Oct – Nazi candidates for the Reichstag won 92% of the vote. 1934 August 1934 1st August – Law concerning the Head of State of the German Reich Merged the offices of the president and the chancellor, creating position of ‘fuhrer’. Confirmed by a plebiscite. 2nd Aug – Hindenburg dies, Hitler becomes head of state. Army swore a personal oath of allegiance to Hitler. June 1934 30th Jun – Night of Long Knives. SS shot SA leaders and other people Hitler saw as threats. January 1934 30th Jan – Law for Reconstruction of the State. Elected state assemblies dissolved, Reich governors (often Nazi gauleiters) appointed to run states.
