Why is the police the most important part of a police state? Why is it more important than the army? Until 1933 each state in Germany had its own police force. By 1936 they had been centralised under Himmler as the Chief of Police. New police organisations were added and the German Police Force in its original form ended. SS – when Hitler became Chancellor they were allowed to act as an axillary police force, after the enabling act they could take people into protective custody, and after the Night of the Long Knives became the chief police arm SA Gestapo SD – Security Police – internal intelligence for the SS RHSA – Reich Main Security Department – created in 1939 to try to bring everything together The army – once Hitler was supreme commander in 1939 and then WWII started the army started to have a stronger controlling presence within Germany.
