Narrative Vocabulary Notes Please take these notes on your interactive notes packet. Quiz Friday, December 4, 2015

The sequence of events in a story. Plot The sequence of events in a story.

Exposition The beginning of the story, where the reader meets the characters and settings.

Rising Action The events that happen that lead up to the turning point in the story; where the conflict is starting.

The story’s turning point, or point of most suspense. Climax The story’s turning point, or point of most suspense.

Falling Action Events that happen after the climax that lead to the ending of the story.

The last part of the story, where the conflict is solved. Resolution The last part of the story, where the conflict is solved.

A person or animal who takes part in a story. Character A person or animal who takes part in a story.

The person telling the story. Narrator The person telling the story.

The story’s main character or hero. Protagonist The story’s main character or hero.

Antagonist The character or force who works against the main character; sometimes “the bad guy.”

Setting When (time) and where (place) the story takes place. Included in the exposition.

The problem or struggle in a story. Conflict The problem or struggle in a story.

The most important part of a story is usually the Problem (conflict)

Point of View

1st person Point of View The point of view where a character is the narrator; uses “I” and “we.”

The point of view where the reader is a character; uses “you.” 2nd person Point of View The point of view where the reader is a character; uses “you.”

3rd Person Limited Point of View The point of view where the narrator tells what many people in the story are doing WITHOUT telling what they are thinking and feeling.

3rd Person All-Knowing Point of View (or “3rd person Omniscient”) The point of view where the narrator tells what many people in the story ARE thinking and feeling.

Genre A category of writing.

Short Story: A brief work of fiction.

Fantasy: A story that contains elements that are entirely imaginary, like mermaids or dragons.

A story that takes place in the past in a real time period. Historical Fiction A story that takes place in the past in a real time period.

Science Fiction A story about imaginary events, often set in the future, and using technology to explain things.

Realistic Fiction: A story that takes place in our own time, about events that could really happen.

Literary Techniques

When animals act like humans in a story. Anthropomorphism When animals act like humans in a story.

Can include word choices and accents. Dialect The author’s use of speech patterns in a character to make the character fit his/her background. Can include word choices and accents.

The feeling of uncertainty that builds as one reads a story. Suspense The feeling of uncertainty that builds as one reads a story.

Tone The way an author feels about the subject of his/her writing is called the tone.

The feeling a reader experiences in a story. Mood The feeling a reader experiences in a story.

Irony When something happens in a story that was different from what was expected.

an important step to take when prewriting your story Is to Plan the basic elements of your tale.

A good way to begin the draft of a story is to Focus on the element that interests you most.

The opening of a story should Grab the reader’s attention.

When writing dialogue, it is a good idea to Make sure the dialogue reflects the speakers’ personalities.

When writing dialogue, you should start a new paragraph Whenever the speaker changes.
