Asif Hasnain, Manuel Peuster Project Group: IANOS Introducing Application-Aware Networking in OpenStack SS16-WS16/17 Prof. Dr. Holger Karl Asif Hasnain, Manuel Peuster

OpenStack Use Cases and Customers Big data applications Processing scientific data e.g., CERN Streaming video e.g., Netflix Building IT infrastructure e.g., VW Managing e-commerce e.g. Walmart … https://www.openstack.org/user-stories/ Cloud computing frameworks Hadoop Spark CERN Volkswagen Walmart 2

OpenStack An open-source framework to create public and private clouds. Is composition of cloud services e.g., Neutron, Nova etc. 3

Application-Aware Networking (AAN) “Optimise (virtual) network using applications’ information (in tenant).” 4

IANOS Application-Aware Networking in OpenStack 5

IANOS Today: OpenStack network operates with tenant information. Goal: Optimise OpenStack network using applications’ information in tenant. OpenStack HEAT orchestrate Application-Aware Infrastructure. 6

Goals of the PG Learn about OpenStack and networking aspects Dive into the OpenStack and networking tools, for instance, OpenDaylight (ODL) Use and contribute to open source tools as basis for your solutions Design and implement framework to support Application-Aware Networking in OpenStack and ODL Integrate these tools to demonstrate sample applications Opportunity: Contribute to open source projects Shows some of the OpenSource projects which may be used for the testbed. But: Final choice is of curse up to the participants 7

Prerequisites Basic knowledge about software development Some programming skills (Python, Java, …) Basic knowledge about networks and systems Willingness to work in a team! Highly recommended: Verteilte Systeme/Distributed Systems bachelor lecture Helpful: Rechnernetze/Computer Networks bachelor lecture 8
