ЦОД Operations Manager Configuration Manager Data Protection Manager Goal: Frame how System Center 2012 (and SP1) deliver unified management for the Cloud OS. Talking Points Let’s discuss the capabilities required to deliver on our promise of unified management: <click> First, you need a “simple” self-service experience to enable your App Owners to specify their requirements. For example, let’s suppose they want to provision a SharePoint service with the following specs: 3 tier .NET architecture Has a set of configuration and deployment parameters to conform with (e.g. perf thresholds, scale out rules, update domains) Needs 99.95% availability SLA Adheres to compliance/security controls around SOX/HIPAA Need on-demand reporting on key availability metrics that track against SLA <click> Next, you need a way to understand the topology and architecture of the application service in question. An application deployed in on an abstracted, or cloud computing model is called a “service”. This would necessitate a “service model” that accurately binds the application’s architecture to the underlying resources where it will be hosted. The “service model” would be comprised of: Service definition information, deployed as “roles”. Roles are like DLLs, i.e. a collection of code with an entry point that runs in its own virtual machine Front end: e.g. load-balanced stateless web серверs Middle worker tier: e.g. order processing, encoding Backend storage: e.g. SQL tables or files Service Configuration information Update domains Availability domains Scale out rules <click> You will need a set of process automation capabilities to break down this application provisioning request into the enterprise change requests that need to be implemented. This could include setting up the underlying infra and then a set of app configuration/release requests that need to be tracked (and ideally implemented with orchestrated automation) <click> Next you need a set of provisioning tools that actually configure and deploy the infra and application layers. <click> the underlying datacenter resources could be physical, virtual, private or public cloud as per the requirements dictated by the application’s service model <click> once the underlying infrastructure and application service are deployed, they would immediately need to be “discovered” and monitored for reporting and health tracking <click> There you see how the System Center 2012 components offer these life cycle management capabilities in combination to help you deliver on the Microsoft promise of unified Cloud OS management: App Controller would offer that self-service experience that allows your application owners manage their apps across on-premises, service provider and Windows Azure environments. Service Manager offers the Стандартизированная self-service catalog that defines “templates” for your applications and infrastructure. App Controller, Virtual Machine Manager, Service Manager and Operations Manager work together to maintain the service model through the application service life cycle Orchestrator and Service Manager offer orchestrated automation for the process workflows required to drive your provisioning and monitoring tools Virtual Machine Manager and Configuration manager can provision physical, virtual and cloud environments Operations Manager (AVIcode capabilities will be built into Operations Manager) monitors your application services end to end and offers deep app insight to help you deliver predictable SLA Your datacenter resources could be deployed anywhere from on-premises, service provider and Windows Azure However, to get to this agile self-service end-state, you will have to start with abstracting your infrastructure and allocating it appropriately so that your business units can deploy and manage their applications on top. Transition: So, how does System Center 2012 get you to this point where you can deliver unified management across cloud? These can really be categorized into three buckets: Application Management: Deploying and operating your business applications Service Delivery & Automation: Standardizing and automating service and resource provisioning, managing change and access controls, etc. Infrastructure management: Deploying and operating all the underlying infrastructure on which your business applications and services run. System Center helps you confidently deliver IT as a Service for your business. System Center 2012 helps your organization consume and deliver IT as a Service by enabling productive infrastructure, predictable applications, and cloud on your terms. System Center 2012 helps you to deliver flexible and cost-effective private-cloud infrastructure to your business units in a self-service model, while carrying forward your existing datacenter investments. Recognizing that applications are where core business value resides, System Center 2012 offers deep application insight, which, combined with a “service-centric” approach, helps you deliver predictable application-service levels. Finally, System Center 2012 empowers you to deliver and consume private and public cloud computing on your terms with common management experiences across your hybrid environments. Productive Infrastructure System Center 2012 helps you deliver flexible and cost-effective infrastructure with what you already know and own. System Center 2012 helps you integrate heterogeneous datacenter investments, including multi-hypervisor environments. You can pool and abstract your datacenter resources and deliver self-service infrastructure to your business units in a flexible, yet controlled, manner. Heterogeneous support To help you carry forward your existing datacenter investments and skillsets, System Center 2012 offers integrated management for your heterogeneous datacenter environments. For example, it offers multi-hypervisor management for Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware vSphere/ESX, and Citrix Xenсервер with Virtual Machine Manager; cross-platform monitoring of Linux/Unix/Sun Solaris guests with Operations Manager; cross-platform configuration management for Linux and Unix серверs with Configuration Manager; and integrated automation across management toolsets from vendors like HP, CA, BMC, EMC, and even VMware with Orchestrator. Process automation System Center 2012 helps you simplify and standardize your datacenter with a flexible process automation platform. By automating repetitive tasks, you can lower your costs and improve service reliability. With Orchestrator, you can integrate and extend your existing toolsets and build flexible workflows (or runbooks) that can span across multiple organizational silos and systems. These workflows are then executed in an orchestrated manner through the automation engine built into Orchestrator. Service Manager offers industry-standard service management capabilities (based on ITIL/MOF) which automates core organizational process workflows like incident management, problem management, change management, and release management. Self-service infrastructure With the provisioning capability of Virtual Machine Manager, you can pool and abstract your datacenter resources (such as compute, network, and storage) into a private cloud infrastructure fabric, which can then be maintained by Virtual Machine Manager and Operations Manager. You can allocate and delegate this pooled fabric to your business unit IT organizations in a flexible, yet controlled, manner using Virtual Machine Manager. Application owners can consume capacity (and request additional capacity) in a self-service mode using the service catalog offered by Service Manager. Requests for capacity would be fulfilled using the process automation and provisioning capabilities offered by Orchestrator and Virtual Machine Manager respectively. Predictable Applications Apps power your business. System Center 2012 helps you deliver predictable application service levels with deep application insight, and holistically manage your application services, which is where your core business value resides. 360 ̊ application monitoring, diagnosis and dev-ops Operations Manager offers deep application and transaction monitoring insight for .NET applications (and J2EE application сервер health) to maximize application availability and performance. Operations Manager also integrates with Microsoft Visual Studio through a connector (also enabled with Intellitrace telemetry for SP1) to unlock development-to-operations collaboration, thereby helping you remediate application issues faster, which results in the delivery of predictable SLAs. Easy-to-use reporting and dashboarding allows you to track and communicate your SLAs more effectively. Additionally, with SP1, Global Service Monitor (GSM) offers the “outside-in” view offering a comprehensive 360 degree monitoring. Comprehensive hybrid application management Microsoft сервер Application Virtualization (SAV), a feature of Virtual Machine Manager, optimizes your modern and existing applications for private cloud deployments with sequenced state separation between the application and underlying infrastructure. SAV dramatically simplifies application servicing (such as upgrades and maintenance) with image-based configuration and management techniques that reduce administrative effort and expense. By decoupling your applications from the infrastructure, SAV helps unlock application portability as appropriate to your business needs. Configuration Manager supports SAV, thereby extending the benefits of SAV to applications and workloads that may be deployed in physical/traditional environments. Through SAV support, Configuration Manager enables easier physical-to-virtual application mobility and in-place application servicing. System Center 2012 empowers your application and service owners with a common self-service experience across on-premises, service provider and Microsoft clouds, thus enabling comprehensive application management in a hybrid context. Service-centric approach In a cloud computing model, a service is a deployed instance of an application along with its associated configuration and virtual infrastructure. System Center 2012 offers a service-centric approach to help you manage your application components in the context of the holistic service that it represents to the business. From provisioning services (visualization, design, composition, deployment, and configuration) to operating them (monitoring, remediation, and upgrades), we help you manage the full lifecycle. For example, Virtual Machine Manager and App Controller enable service-centric provisioning and updates while Operations Manager enables monitoring at the service level. Your Cloud Private and public cloud computing on your terms managed with a common toolset. System Center 2012 empowers you to deliver and consume private and public cloud computing on your terms, with common management experiences across your hybrid environments. Flexibility with delegation and control Construct and manage clouds across multiple datacenters, multiple infrastructures (such as Microsoft and VMware), and service providers (Windows Azure). Virtual Machine Manager Your existing Networks are Complicated. You have all these different elements and change is difficult, and you have to wait for the Network Team to give you the addresses you need. We make it simple Here we need to set the stage that we need to make Network assignments easier. I have multiple hosts each could have different NICs attached to the network as well as different VLANs assigned. I have multiple datacenters and each of them may have different networking schemes. As an Infrastructure administrator, I want to make it easy for my self service users to create VMs on the network they want, but I want to have control of which NICs/IPs, etc. the VM uses With System Center 2012, I can do this via Logical Network Abstraction. I can create different Logical Networks and I as an administrator can assign which Networks are associated with which Networks. I can also create IP Pools that will allow me to allocate IPs that are appropriate for the specific datacenter I choose. I have a complex networking environment, and I don’t want to expose that complexity to folks who don’t need to know it Network Abstraction - Logical Network Abstractions with IP and MAC Address Management, and Load Balancer Support Logical Network Abstraction for Cloud environment Can help with group interactions allowing for less time to provide Access System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. SDN is about being able to configure end hosts and physical network elements, dynamically adjust policies for how traffic flows through the network, and create virtual network abstractions that support real-time VM instantiation and migration throughout the datacenter. This definition of SDN is, in fact, broader, than the definition currently used by many industry players who only focus on configuration of physical network elements. Our broader SDN definition includes programmability of end hosts, enabling end-to-end software control in the datacenter. Our definition also supports real-time changes in response to VM placement and migration. As we will see below, the integration of VM management and network control is important to facilitate automation and reliability in large-scale datacenters. Create virtual networks that run on top of the physical network. In a multi-tenant cloud, a virtual network might represent a tenant’s network topology, complete with the tenant’s own IP addresses, subnets, and even routing topology. Through SDN, virtual networks can be created dynamically, and they can support VM mobility throughout the datacenter while preserving the logical network abstraction. Control traffic flow within the datacenter. Some classes of traffic may need forwarding to a particular appliance (or VM) for security analysis or monitoring. You may need to create bandwidth guarantees or enforce bandwidth caps on particular workloads. Through SDN, you can create these policies and dynamically change them according to the needs of your workloads. Create integrated policies that span the physical and virtual networks. Through SDN, you can ensure that your physical network and endpoints handle traffic similarly. For example, you may want to deploy common security Профильs, or you may want to share monitoring and metering infrastructure across both physical and virtual switches. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. Let’s look at Software Defined Networking in a bit more detail. Summary: сервер Virtualization is a well-understood concept that allows multiple сервер instances to run on a single physical host concurrently, but isolated from each other, with each сервер instance essentially acting as if it’s the only one running on the physical machine. Hyper‑V Network Virtualization extends the concept of сервер virtualization to allow multiple virtual networks, potentially with overlapping IP addresses, to be deployed on the same physical network. With Hyper‑V Network Virtualization, you can set policies that isolate traffic in your dedicated virtual network independently of the physical infrastructure. --- Isolating networks of virtual machines on a shared network can be a challenge. Traditionally, VLANs are used to isolate networks, but VLANs are very complex to manage on a large scale. Unfortunately, when IP addresses are moved to the cloud, the addresses must be changed to accommodate the physical and topological restrictions of the data center. Renumbering IP addresses is cumbersome because the associated policies that are based on the IP addresses must also be updated. The physical layout of a data center influences the permissible potential IP addresses for virtual machines that run on a specific сервер that is connected to a specific rack in the data center. A virtual machine that is provisioned and placed in the data center must adhere to the choices and restrictions regarding its IP address. This can result in data center administrators assigning IP addresses to virtual machines based on network needs, requiring virtual machine owners to adjust their configurations and policies that were based on the original IP address. This renumbering overhead is so high that some enterprises choose to deploy only new services into the cloud and leave legacy applications unchanged. Hyper‑V Network Virtualization solves these problems. With this feature, you can isolate network traffic from different business units or customers on a shared infrastructure and not be required to use VLANs. Hyper‑V Network Virtualization also lets you move virtual machines as needed within your virtual infrastructure while preserving their virtual network assignments. Finally, you can even use Hyper‑V Network Virtualization to transparently integrate these private networks into a preexisting infrastructure on another site. The figure illustrates how Hyper‑V Network Virtualization isolates the traffic of 2 networks. In it, Orange and Red virtual machines are hosted on a single physical network, and as you can see they’re even consolidated on the same two physical серверs. Because they belong to separate Blue and Orange virtual networks, the virtual machines can’t communicate with each other. Even if the customers assign them IP addresses from the same address space, they would run just fine – not overlapping, isolated from each other’s network traffic. System Center 2012 provides the Логический коммутаторes for the blue and orange networks – and the policy controls needed to configure the VMs in each network properly. Problems solved Network virtualization solves earlier problems by: Removing VLAN constraints. Eliminating hierarchical IP address assignment for virtual machines. REFERENCE ------------------------- Network Virtualization On the same physical network: You can run multiple virtual network infrastructures. You can have overlapping IP addresses. Each virtual network infrastructure acts as if it’s the only one running on the shared physical network infrastructure. The following are the primary drawbacks of VLANs: Cumbersome reconfiguration of Производство switches is required whenever virtual machines or isolation boundaries must be moved, and the frequent reconfiguration of the physical network to add or modify VLANs increases the risk of an unplanned loss of service. VLANs have limited scalability because typical switches support only 1,000 VLAN IDs (with a maximum of 4,095). VLANs cannot span multiple subnets, which limits the number of nodes in a single VLAN and restricts the placement of virtual machines based on physical location.

Talking points With the System Center 2012 release, VMM now support provisioning of a bare metal сервер to Hyper-V cluster in an efficient and automated way. <click> First, storage is discovered and provisioned for use with virtual machine deployments. <click> Next, network resources are defined using logical networks. IP, VIP and MAC addresses can then be assigned to new virtual machines from designated pools. <click> At this point VMM communicates with the bare metal сервер via a baseboard management controller or similar device which can be used to force the machine to boot and begin installing an operating system from a Windows Deployment сервер. <click> Once the operating system is installed, VMM then configures Hyper-v on the new сервер. <click> At this point the Create cluster capability in VMM can be used to join the newly provisioned virtual machine to a cluster and connect to the configured storage and network resources – you’re done! This is pretty powerful considering how long this task could take without Стандартизированная and automated processes.
With all of these infrastructure components, how do I ensure that I am Проактивная in understanding utilization and performance, I can quickly be alerted if a problem occurs having both built in knowledge of how to fix it as well as “tribal” knowledge. Also, with my infrastructure for the Private Cloud, I need to ensure that I can update the infrastructure components without affecting my service levels. With the datacenter infrastructure running efficiently, you also need to be able to recover in case of both element outage and whole site recovery. TRANSCRIPTION STARTS HERE All right, so when we’re thinking about monitoring and operating the cloud infrastructure, one of the things that we have to focus on is that we want to make sure that we can keep this infrastructure up and running. So the infrastructure components, the physical resources that these applications are running upon needs to, you need to be able to monitor these in a Проактивная way so you can monitor how the physical compute OS storage and network resources are performing and ensure that you can maintain your service level agreements with your application owners. If something does occur you have to be able to quickly correct that action, find out what the root cause is and quickly be able to fix the problems that occur and to do that you want to be able to use knowledge from the application owner, in other words the people that created the application as well as your own company knowledge because the fact is that maybe even though something may be able to be resolved one way, you guys in your organization may do it another way and that way works every time for your organization so you want to have both of those, the knowledge from the manufacturer, as well as your own in company built knowledge. Now, as things mature and over time you’ll need to make updates to these systems so you’ll want to standardize the approach to updating your environment to ensure that everything’s at the right patch level and correctly updated and we’ll talk a little bit about how that happens and then once these applications are up and running and you want to ensure availability so that if something happens you can quickly recover or if an element fails you can continue to operate on the remaining elements within your organization. So we’re going to talk about each of these different sections. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Now, using the Operations Manager component of System Center 2012 we allow you to do compute in OS monitoring for both your Windows, Linux and your UNIX systems. So we help you maintain and ensure that you’re achieving your SLAs because you can monitor historic ally the performance of your systems, you can trend your infrastructure usage across your entire infrastructure over time to see when or if you’re going to start to run out of capacity and if so be able to Проактивнаяly pull in and add more resources within your infrastructure to be able to accommodate changes in workloads. And this allows for broad service coverage using management packs so if you have applications we have a large partnership with many different organizations that create management packs for managing their application through Operations Manager so you can see exactly how the application is performing and use the vendor who created the application’s knowledge to determine if that application is performing the most effectively and efficiently and to be able to take Корректирующая actions if something does go wrong. So management packs are very important because with management packs it allows me to customize and monitor exactly what applications or services or systems are running on within my environment without having to install every single thing for everybody. So we provide management packs for all Microsoft applications, like Windows Server, Exchange, Link, SharePoint those types of things which really focus on monitoring and looking at the important pieces of that application and finding out whether or not that application is performing appropriately, put in common thresholds that you can use so that if something does happen with that application then you can adjust that application and it will alert you if something goes wrong. Like let’s say a common latency for a response from a certain database is 500 ms, well that threshold is 500 ms because that’s what the common time for that, if that happens and it goes above that you’ll get alerted, if the latency is below that, everything will be performing appropriately but the nice thing is is that in your environment you may have different needs so you can take that threshold and you can adjust it to be higher or lower and then use that as the threshold for using this. So once an alert does occur we provide through these management packs knowledge from organization or our knowledge of the application as to what’s happening with that application and what types of things you can do to resolve it. Best practices are also set inside of these management packs for configuration of the alert thresholds that you can change and then we also have reporting information so if you want to run canned reports off of this application you can pull all that from these different management packs and you can download these management packs straight from the Microsoft catalog or you can get them from your application vendor and then import them into Operations Manager. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. And we do this through the ability to discover the systems and since we have multi vendor support there’s a long list of the different devices that we support but basically if the network devices talk to the SMS&P 1 version 2 or 3 we’ll be able to communicate with them and pool the information. The higher level SMSP talk the more information we’ll be able to pull , the more detailed information you can have. I will be able to monitor all the way down to port and the interface level as well as the underlying peripherals within that switch so you’ll be able to get status on say how the switches CPU is performing of the memory or the fan those types of things and pull all those things together to be alerted if any one of these systems goes wrong. You’ll have a network summary view so you can visualize how this is performing in the network overall, we also have a network vicinity view so you can basically click on one of these network devices, pull up the network vicinity view and be able to see the entire map of how this device connects to this other device connects to this other device, and find out where that problem is. And then with all of this information that we’re pulling in and you’ll be able to report on that like how much utilization on the systems memory, report error traffic, those types of things, so you’ll be able to see how it’s performing, pull reports on it and be able to adjust for future growth. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. I can also like we talked about earlier correlate the devices between the different network systems within this network map vicinity view, what this allows me to do is take a particular network device and see what’s connected to it. Not only do I see the physical network devices connected to it but I also see the OS’s basically the systems that are connected to those devices, now with each of those systems I may have virtual machines running on those, let’s say Hyper-V systems. Well in those Hyper-V systems they have a virtual switch and they have multiple virtual machines attached to them, so not only can I see in the network vicinity view the physical devices connected to it, but I can also see the VM to network relationships so this really gives me a true correlation between how these things are performing. And then as I need to find more information onto it of that system like what it is, what type it’s running, IP Address, versions and those types of things, I can drill into that system and get that detailed content for that particular network device. So what this allows me to do in storage monitoring is pull information from these multiple vendors and pull them together into a common view and then if I need more detailed information I’ll be able to draw into the particular vendors management packs for those particular SAN devices. At least what this will do is give me that quick overall view of how my storage is performing before moving anywhere else. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. So we have a broad range of resources that we can out of the box view the health of, but then also if you bring in company management packs from different organizations whether they be the organization that created that application or they be a third party organization that has created these management packs to support multiple different devices. You can get a full range of health monitoring for your systems. But straight out of the box we have Windows, Linux, UNIX environments that we manage as well as monitor within Operations Manager. And then once you have a problem even if it’s not a Windows system you can drill down into that problem via the health monitoring and see exactly what is going on with that system. © 2011 Microsoft Corporation. The other thing you can do within Operations Manager is you can pool a set of resources together and build a service and pull that service view together to have one high level view of the application and then if you see that the application is not green you can drill down into where that problem is occurring. So for example I may have a multi tier system where I have a web tier, I have an application tier, I have a database tier I may not also want to have things like synthetic transactions that are occurring as well as application performance monitoring in views, I can pull that all together in distributed application and have all the different pieces that correlate together that build this one entire service and I can monitor that from a high level and if everything’s green it’s fine, and if it’s not then I can drill down and find out if it’s a problem with the synthetic transactions with the database with the underlying physical infrastructure and find out exactly what that problem is and then fix it quickly. So this allows me to quickly find the root cause, is it the application, is it the infrastructure, and then quickly find out where within there I need to go to fix it. We have the Operations Manager console where I can administer everything through this console and it gives me an entire view of the system for both configuring as well as monitoring the system but then also I have the ability to provide that to other people to view via the Operations Manager web console, so through the Operations Manager web client they can see the monitoring aspects and how the application is performing or the service is performing or the infrastructure is performing but just the views that I allow them to see through the roles that I give them. Or I can give them the ability to post it up as SharePoint web parts, to publish this as like a dashboard so that executives that may just want to get a quick view of how everything is performing can go up quickly, view the content on the dashboard, see how things are running and then be able to see yea, everything’s running the way I expect it to, or not and just get that one quick view via SharePoint web parts and publishing it there. the nice thing is it’s the same view across all different pieces of the application and I as an adminster can delegate and decide what each of these users get to see. Now we do that through either the Operations Manager management server or the web server for providing that information and that pulls the information either through the Ops Manager DB or the data warehouse for the reporting capabilities. Transition: Another way that System Center 2012 enables you to meeting your fabric SLA is by ensuring your virtual resources are up to date. Traditional update engines like System Center Configuration Manager aren’t cluster-aware. They’re likely to push out patches to all hosts simultaneously, disrupting cluster availability. VMM 2012 can integrate with a dedicated 64-bit Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP2 server and will orchestrate cluster patching by migrating VMs to other hosts in the cluster, patching the node and rebooting if required. It will repeat the process on the next host until the whole cluster is up-to-date. You can define update baselines with lists of required updates. VMM will then scan hosts to determine compliance, and finally apply patches to bring them current. You will have the option to exempt particular hosts if a patch turns out to cause instability. Talking Points: The feature requires a pre-existing, dedicated, root WSUS 3.0 SP2 64 bit server. If the WSUS server is remote, the WSUS console is required on the VMM server. It supports WSUS in SSL mode. A scan is then conducted to see if the server is compliant or not for the assigned baseline. VMM leverages WUA for applicability and compliance. Scan is on demand and automatable using PowerShell. VMM then makes the server compliant by installing missing updates. Update installation progress can be tracked in the VMM console and remediation is on demand and automatable using PowerShell. Virtual Machine Manager provides a feature by which you can manage updates for your virtual machine hosts, library servers, PXE servers, the Windows Server Update Management (WSUS) server, and the VMM server itself in the VMM console. Enable feature In VMM, use Add WSUS server wizard to select and add WSUS server and then synchronize with the latest updates. VMM gets a catalog of updates from the update server. It points the fabric servers to the correct update server, i.e. configures the WUA agent on each fabric server. Create Baseline After you enable update management in VMM, you are ready to prepare for patching by configuring update baselines. An update baseline contains a set of required updates. The baseline is a logical grouping of updates to assess compliance. VMM provides two sample baselines for Security and Critical updates. You can assign the baseline to hosts, host groups and host clusters, plus VMM server roles (library server, PXE server, Update server and VMM server). You cannot assign it to VMs (running or stored) or VHDs in the library. Scan Servers During a compliance scan, computers that are assigned to a baseline are graded for compliance to their assigned baselines. After a computer is found noncompliant, an administrator brings the computer into compliance through update remediation. <click> Remediate servers If computers are found to be non-compliant, remediation can be performed. When you perform update remediation on a host cluster, VMM orchestrates the updates, in turn placing each cluster node in maintenance mode, migrating virtual machines off the host by using intelligent placement, and then installing the updates. If the cluster supports live migration of Windows Server-based virtual machines, live migration is used. If the cluster does not support live migration, VMM saves state for the virtual machines and does not migrate them. Outline for talking points Managing Baselines Create baseline Logical grouping updates to assess compliance Two sample baselines for Security and Critical updates Assign baseline Choosing the servers to assess compliance Can assign to Hosts, Host Groups and Host Clusters VMM Server Roles – Library Server, PXE Server, Update Server, VMM Server Can NOT assign to VMs (running or stored), VHDs in library Scan Check if the server is compliant or not for assigned baseline VMM leverages WUA for applicability and compliance Scan is on demand and automatable using PowerShell Remediate Make the server compliant by installing missing updates Update installation progress can be tracked in VMM console Remediate is on demand and automatable using PowerShell Notes: - Requires WSUS 3.0 SP2 64 Bit server - Requires WSUS console on VMM server if WSUS server is remote - Supports WSUS in SSL mode - Share a WSUS root server between SCCM and SCVMM -NEW - Utilize an autonomous SCCM WSUS DSS server at the integration point -NEW - Enable centralized reporting via SCCM reporting -NEW TRANSCRIPTION STARTS HERE And within Virtual Machine Manager we have the ability to keep you compliant and up to date with the systems by creating a automated and orchestrated way of updating these systems. So my VMM server, virtual machine manager server will be connected to and monitored by the underlying Hyper-V host, and what we’ll do is we’ll turn on the ability to create these baseline and updates, connect to a WSUS server so I will have the different patches that are Доступная, we’ll manage the baselines through the update catalog and create an existing baseline of this is the patches that need to be Доступная and on each of the systems, VMM will then scan all the different servers and ensure that they are at that baseline, any servers that aren’t at that baseline we will then do an orchestrated patching so it will remediate the servers, but it will do it one server at a time, migrating all the VMs off of that server so if I have a cluster of say 10 Hyper-V hosts it will only take one of those systems down at a time, migrate off of that system, to the other systems and basically remove that system from the cluster, do the update to it, bring it back in, rejoin the cluster, then take the next system, migrate all the VMs off of that one, remove that one from the cluster update it, reboot it, bring it back in to the cluster then do the next one and do that all the way down the host in a way where none of my virtual machines go down but I’ll be able to update all the virtual machines. Now there may be some of the systems that I don’t want to update at the same time, maybe want to update at a later date, well I can create exemptions for those and I can manage those exemptions on a one by one, case by case basis. So this give me a little bit of flexibility in how to keep my systems up to date in a way that’s orchestrated and non disruptive to the running applications and services running on top of that virtualization platform. So one thing we want to make sure of is that the systems are able to be backed up. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. There are three main areas that you can focus on as you talk about Protecting the physical infrastructure 1. How our back-up and recovery solution is optimized for Microsoft Applications and for Windows. You can talk about how Data Protection Manager can do item level recovery in Sharepoint and Hyper-V in a matter of seconds. You can talk about extended support for any Windows application that relies on VSS writer and our investments in support of Non Microsoft products through customizable XML files. 2. Our back up and recovery story is ready for large enterprises. You can quote MSIT as an example with us running 80 DPM servers running backing up 3.5 Peta bytes of data. We support offsite back-up to cloud through partners like IronMountain. For machines that lie outside the domain, which is a very common scenario, we support certificate based protection. We also have protection of clustered work loads and we will see more of it in the next couple of slides. You can also talk about having co-location where we can back-up more than one application side by side on the same tape. 3. This is also a good place to reiterate how our System Center products work together to give a good complete solution. Data Protection Manager integrates with Operations Manager and you can monitor your back-up and recovery from the same console you use to monitor your Application, your fabric and your infrastructure. If you have several DPM servers running, you can view them all from a single pane of glass and the user can see only the information that he has access to. TRANSCRIPTION STARTS HERE And with System Center 2012 we’ve done a lot of work to ensure that the underlying physical systems are backed up but not only are the underlying physical systems backed up but the virtual machines themselves are properly backed up in a way that’s consistent and can be recovered. So we’ve optimized System Center 2012 in SP1 Data Protection Manager to be able to handle these applications in this underlying Microsoft systems using things like the VSS writer we’re able to back up things very consistent for the virtual machines running on those systems and be able to provide you with things like quick item level recovery for your SharePoint and your Hyper-V systems. So the three main areas that you can focus on when you want to protect your physical infrastructure, the first one is you want to make sure that your back up and recovery system is optimized for Microsoft applications as well as for the Windows operating system it’s running on. With Data Protection Manager we can do item level recovery in both SharePoint and Hyper-V in a matter of seconds so now you can restore files from within the Hyper-V system and things like that. We also support extended support for Windows applications that rely on the VSS writer so our investments and support of non-Microsoft products can occur through creating these customizable XML files for backing up these other applications. The other thing is that within our backup system we’re really designed for enterprise class applications, our Microsoft IT is running 80 DPM servers that are backing up 3.5 peta bytes of data within them, so as an example of a large scale system backing up massive amounts of data through Data Protection Manager. So not only do we support back ups to systems internally where you can back up to disk or back up to tape, but we also support back up to cloud with our partners of companies like Iron Mountain as well as we can do a DPM to DPM back up where we can back up from one DPM server to another one so that if one of the physical servers, DPM server goes down we can still have recovery capabilities from the other TCPM environment. And then lastly we would be able to, we’ve combined the System Center products and pulled them together to be able to communicate together and in that Data Protection Manager integrates with Operations Manager and you can monitor your back up and recovery solution within Operations Manager which is the same console which you would use to monitor your applications, so now you have both of these things pulled together and even if you have several DPM servers running you can view them all from that single operations manager console and how they’re performing from within there. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. So when you’re talking about backing up Microsoft workloads you’re really talking about efficient host level backups, supporting back ups of virtual machines even if you did live migrations of them, support all your Hyper-V deployments and DPM itself can run as a virtual machine, we fully support that. When we talk about backing up SQL we’re really talking about it’s change tracking but storage efficient way of managing change tracking so that we can ensure the quickest recovery times there. Any point and time recovery you can do self restore and we support for both your different SQL clustering environment whether it’s mirroring, clustering or always on. With SharePoint we can protect at the farm level but recover at the granular level so you can get that one little document that you want without the massive recovery restoration of the entire farm. If new databases come out you can discover and protect them inside of there and we can search against all items inside of the recovery point so you can pull the items exactly that you want from inside DPM.
